Any funny stories about telling people what you do for a living? Do you tell people you do "voiceovers" or "commercials?" I used to just say I was retired but the reply is always "You're too young to retire." Well...not so much now. lol |

I usually say "I'm an actor" or "I'm a voice over actor."
Sometimes I just say "I work from home."

I usually say; "I do as little as possible..."
They just laugh with me... and it never really gets down to what I do or do not do for a "living" (as meager as it is).

Most people are underwhelmed by me.
On Thursday morning Wendy was driving somewhere while listening to BBC Radio2 (the most popular radio station in the UK) when she heard Ken Bruce presenter/announcer/DJ who was talking about people working from home say something like "this man lives in Scotland and works for 15 seconds at a time, he's one of the top voice overs in the country".
"Oh aye, that'll be Philip" said Wendy to the car radio. That's as good as it gets for me. When someone mentions me in a professional context to anyone who knows me the response is SIGH "WHATEVER!"
Wendy and Fraser's daughter celebrated her 14th birthday yesterday so we went bearing gifts ....... If you'd like to meet Wendy and Lauren (the birthday girl) go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dz-3My1IAh4 , apologies for Fraser providing backing enthusiasm! |

I LOVE that!
Can I steal it?
Usually I tell people I'm one of the matrons of Voice-Mail jail!
After the puzzled looks I tell them what I do
...and they say...."You get paid for that?...Why?"
sigh....

After so many times saying, "I do voice overs" and being asked, where have I heard you?...and realizing the only thing I've voiced that anyone seems to know is the youngest boy on DragonBall Z...
I just say I do cartoon voices for a living...talk about DragaonBall Z and leave it at that...all the other stuff is just gravy In the world of voice overs it's small-time...but it's the only thing people ever 'know'.
I never have enjoyed talking about my job...even when I was on the radio...I usually just try to get people to ask my husband what he does... _________________ Threadjackers local 420

Coming from a computer tech world, I had a hard time explaining what I was going to start doing last year. When I would tell them I was going to start training for voiceover, they told me, "Good idea! That's a good field to get into right now!"
I'd have to stop them before the conversation went too much further and explain that I didn't mean the telephonic technology... _________________ Greg Littlefield

What about the ones that respond with, "Oh, I always thought I could do that. I'm thinking about calling a station and getting on the air."
It's really hard not come back with something like, "Yeah, go ahead, I'm going into brain surgery. I know I can do that and I look so good in scrubs!"
Quick, get me my chocolate! _________________ Wild Willie Edwards

So my ex-wife drags me into court to raise her alimony and I'm sitting in the witness box when the judge asks me what I do for a living. I tell him that I am a voice over talent for radio and TV commercials. He looks at me and says, "With that voice?"
(The outcome of the hearing for those of you who have made it this far without dozing: The alimony payment was reduced by half. By the way, my attorney also does voice overs.) |

Chris,
Now that is perhaps the ultimate back-handed compliment! _________________ Be well,

After hearing my voice the judge probably felt sorry for me. |
