From Voice123 -

"Narrate self help book, (audio book), 30,000 words, in US accent, (talent does not have to be American, just sound like one), self help books must be read with suitable posture. Please provide your quotes."

I don't answer anything that asks me to quote, but I do glance at them and was wondering what they really meant to say.

Connie,

My first thought when that came through my inbox a few minutes ago was... "suitable delivery" given that the subject matter is a self-help book. Smile

I thought what the hey...and quoted 'em $4,000. I always sit up straight when I narrate. And when I narrate I'm helping myself.

I just assumed it was a self-help book about spine hygiene.

I saw that post on V123. Then the next one that showed up in my box had this in it:

"We are looking for the 'voice of Jesus'. The job will likely require 2 weeks or more of studio time plus potential follow up work on commercials, promotions, interviews, etc. The ideal voice must be kind, gentle, compassionate. We want listeners to believe this is Jesus resurrected."

Sure. No problem. Piece of cake. Let me guess -- do they think Jesus sounds like James Earl Jones?

Don't all job listings ask for a rate quote?

If they don't have some sort of budget range, I won't answer in 99% of the cases. If it is something intriguing, or very different, I might at least record an audition to see what I come up with - many times deciding not to send it.

If it is IVR/voicemail and the quoted rate is in my minimum fee, I might answer it if it is a Generic response - NO ONE NEEDS A CUSTOM AUDITION for a $100 - 6 line voice mail job!

If it is a commercial and they don't say where it is being run and for how long - I usually don't respond...unless it is really good copy and I simply want to hear what my mind does with it. Then I'll ask questions about shelf-life and market and still not give a quote due to incomplete information.

There have been a few interesting projects come through in the past few weeks - some with nice stated budgets and even a few ISDN requests...those I do respond to.

That's what I meant by that Jeffrey. I so prefer my agent call me with work, so I don't have to do any bidding.

Sure, we're having fun with this but the dictionary takes it quite seriously:

    4. a mental or spiritual attitude: His ideas reveal a defensive posture.
    5. one's image or policy as perceived by the public, other nations, etc.: The company wants to develop a more aggressive marketing posture.

Definitions 1, 2 and 3 didn't apply.

by the way, Connie, I couldn't agree more with your later statement regarding auditions. One time I got a call to audition for one word ("Wow!"). I told them to listen to my demo.

The point to me is that this definition is not the preferred usage of the word in standard American English. I have had a spate of inquiries from non-Native English speakers with confusing grammar and sentences that end up incomprehensible - due to reliance on dictionaries. Several of my regular clients count on script doctoring, but others simply don't understand why I am suggesting that their native English speaking audience will not understand their presentation.

Here is just some of what ensued yesterday from what started as a solicitation to me - I declined their offer, but provided some suggestions to help them raise the professionalism of the letter - and ended up with this - "Even we are not interested to work with your company & you. My English is good & who r u to tell me."

So, I told him I was a scriptwriter as well as voice talent and provided this service. His final response - "If you are good in English then why you don’t phrase sentence & sent me with your words."

I would have done a quick grammatical pass, but there were two sentences in the original letter that were so convoluted, that I would have had to spend a lot of time asking questions in order to figure out what they were trying to say. So I stopped the madness and went back to some paying work.

Connie,
I found some of your comments on what jobs you answer very enlightening. I often wonder if I don't get jobs because I do so few custom demos. I like how you have a definite guideline on when you will NOT give a custom read.

Connie,

Any idea where he'd like to be sent?

At any rate, your words certainly send me! A very enlightening post to be sure.
