Thanks for posting this DB. Very interesting to compare various Australian inflections. Woud also have been interesting to compare various socio-economic and educational levels.

Greg--You beat me to it! Great story, eh? I figured the one guy was from Sicily. Sounds like my brother-in-law's father, I kid you not.

It was a good story. I've only read a couple books and listened to examples on website like the one in that story, but dialect development and recognition is an entire science in itself. My plan is to master conversational American before I dive into that. Wink

Neat. Thanks for posting that.

Paul Meier of The Other Dialects Website was interviewed on NPR a few years ago about the accents of some of the Oscar nominees of 2005 - that was very interesting too. You can listen here.

I'm taking a university course on dialects right now which is blissfully fun. As a side project I'm trying to learn some Cajun. The resources for that are slimmer or at least require more sleuthing than for most of the other dialects of the American South but I have ordered a CD set called "Cajun: Self-taught". It is amazing what is out there for the curious.

My favorite Cajun expression: "Speed up the TV". Translation: turn up the volume on the TV. More gems can be found here.
