I wrote about this very topic on my blog when I was following Harlan Hogan's portable booth article. I have updated links to the stuff I used. You can read it here. |

rich,
nice article! You have to dig a little, but you can find 12 x 12 pieces, 24 x 24 pieces, and 24 x 48 pieces of Auralex or Sonex at various places so you don't have to spend so much on it.
I've been meaning to reconfigure mine to make it more "portable" but haven't gotten around to it since I haven't used it in forever. But we're going on vacation in April so I guess I better get to it. _________________ Hart Voice Overs Blog

During the time I've known Steve he's offered excellent advice to me on portable recording setups, it's the way he works and you would be hard pressed to find anyone who has spent the time and energy into perfecting the portable voiceover setup.
Given the manufacturer he has teamed up with, it would be my guess, and just that, that the frequency response of the unit might be considerable better than the DIY versions I've seen posted. Gretch-Ken has years of experience designing and building sound isolation units and they were, hands down, the best source of information when I began looking for a vocal booth manufacturer.
Do your research. You get what you pay for. _________________ Genus |

Kevin,
You are probably right, I'm sure it works very well. But it's $1,244.00.
If you're using a MKH416 or a U87 run through a high end preamp it may very well be worth the investment. Having not tried one I don't know.
But I would suggest that if your signal path costs less than the booth in a bag then a home brew version will work for you perfectly and you'll never notice the difference as long as you use quality foam and materials.
I certainly didn't mean to belittle Steve, Gretch-Ken, or the product and I apologize if I came across that way.
You got me thinking. It would be great fun to do a sort of A/B test with all the stuff we've come up with. Las Vegas would be a perfect place to do it. Another reason I wish I was going.
But it would be cool to do a shoot out with Steve's booth in a bag, perhaps the SE reflexion filter, a homemade box or two ala Harlan Hogan/Douglas Spotted Eagle, and perhaps a hotel closet lined with blankets. _________________ Hart Voice Overs Blog
