In October I took a chance and handed over $150 to Voicehunter.com to be a listed British voice.

This morning I did a search on Voicehunter for British male voice 30-40s commercials - No sign of me, tried a few other variables - No sign of me. OK, let's try Philip Banks - No sign of me.

For comparison I tried a Google search -

Top uk voice over artist -page 1

The cost for the latter? ZERO.

So we have established the price of invisibility, it's $150

Heh-- type "top female voice talent" into Google and see who shows up first!!

Voice Hunter is not like any of the other collective marketing sites. They don't park people's demos on their site; these guys can be much more hands-on with the work people get— that is, they make recommendations to clients and stuff. Sometimes you'll just get a job handed to you.

If you look up "Banks" on their casting page,
http://www.voicehunter.com/casting.htm
you'll find your name spelled Phillip (with 2 "L"s) Banks, but you won't hear a demo. Your name links to this page:
http://www.voicehunter.com/nodemo.htm
People looking specifically for you can request a demo by email.

They're using a completely different model from other pay-to-play sites.
They send out casting notices every so often and the clients are worth the time to audition.
VoiceHunter also vets their talent. If someone is making money at the $150 entry level, they'll be recommended for a higher tier. If you have success at that tier, they'll offer you the next. Yeah, you pay to be included, but you're in the pool for better jobs. And so it goes up their hierarchy, and the higher the level, the fewer slots there are.
The top tier is closed-- they allow very few people to occupy the most visible spots, and I don't see Vanessa Marshall or Don LaFontaine retiring very soon!

I'm not trying to sell this service to anyone, I'm just explaining how it's different from the "takes all comers" sites.

One thing in particular-- they answer their email. If you have any questions about the way this service works and what kind of bang you get for your buck, just drop a line to Gabrielle. She's very genial and helpful.

An email has been sent to them. But the important part of my post is that, like in my email I have made no comment regarding lack of work just how difficult or impossible it was to find me using obvious searches.

The business model may be different, they may be more hands on, they are no doubt genial people but that changes nothing. If I can't find me when I know I am there how are time pressed potential clinets expected to find me. A buried free listing would not raise an eyebrow here, that would be unfair yet whilst $150 is neither here nor there I should be more visible for my money.

If I am easy to find in a number of places at no cost then it is reasonable to expect to something extra for my fee and that doesn't appear to be the case.

OK - that's un-freakn' believable. I sure wish my bank account lived up to my reputation!

(I also typed in worst female voice talent - just to check the search engine's thought process.)
