I have a regular client that I've done voice mail recordings for. I have always done it using their system, over the phone.

They now need over 50 new prompts, and I want to be able to use Adobe Audition 1.5 to record them. I have to admit that I'm an idiot when it comes to some of these sound settings and what they mean. I am hoping someone can help...

The client needs:
"8 kilohertz PCM Dialogic format .VOX files"

So, do I record at a sample rate of 8000, 8 bit resolution (or 16?), and save as a VOX file?

Are there any tips on making the wave form less...staticky at this resolution?

Heeeeelp!

Ok-- never mind for now... I changed my search parameters and found some helpful threads. I've sent a new test file to the client and I'm standing by with fingers crossed!

So, please just ignore me. If you can.

Amy,

I'm sorry for not obeying (and ignoring you), but just down the road a couple of hours lives one of the world's leading authorities on phone system audio, our own Connie Terwilliger. You may already know this from searching the archives here, but in case you didn't... Smile

I'd think you'd record it at 44.1k 16bit and then convert down to 8k 8bit .vox you won't get the "static" problem that way.

The problem is that they can't open the file AT ALL! We'd be grateful for static!!!!! Actually, they only get static-- no voice. Angry

If all they get is static, there must be something wrong with whatever program they are using to listen, unzip or unpack the file that you sent.
Keep in mind that a .vox file unlinke a .wav file does not contain a header to specify the encoding format which must be known in order to play the file.

Feel free to send me a .vox to see if it works here on my end then maybe we can narrow down where the problem might be.

Connie helped me figure it out. By figuring it out for me. (Thanks!) The client needed a somewhat obscure file format dialogic mu-law .vox (not .wav!) It's hard to find something (inexpensive) to make this conversion. Once I was on the right trail, I managed to find something that is working great! Gold Wave Digital Audio Editor! it supports almost every (weird) audio file format known to man! (Thanks for the kind offer, Steve!)

Deirdre,

Yes she does. Amy, I'm so glad you were able to get to the bottom of your mystery.

Amy--Sometimes I get requests for mu-law, which I ignore. When the client wants mono or lower res, I choose those parameters when opening a new file, as is the case with AA 1.0 and--I don't think--no different in AA 1.5, which I have on my laptop. So I open new file, select 8000, 8-bit, mono, for example, and record that way. I've not figured out why clients want different file formats, as .wav and mp3 seem to suit my longtime phone prompt client just fine... Rolls Eyes

Sadly, Diane, that didn't work this time. They have a wonderful IVR program from the UK that was a great bargain for them, but it's super picky about files, as I learned yesterday.

All. Day. Yesterday.

Connie saved me just before I dove under a speeding truck.
