|
|
So, I was down at an open casting call for a locally-produced game show with big money prizes, and I met this nice man.
So, we started chatting.
"What do you do?" I asked innocently.
He rattled off an assortment of random ways one could occupy oneself. And then he asked me what I do.
"I'm a voice over actor" I reply. Of course.
"Oh! Me too!" he says.
"Really?" I reply. "What a small world."
"Yes. I record my auditions from home, mostly."
"Cool!" I answer. Maybe he really is a member of the VT guild after all. "What kind of mic do you usually use?"
"I have a headset mic that came free with my webcam!" he enthusiastically volunteered. "I just recorded a demo and I'm editing it myself."
Then I said "Oh!" (What else could I say?)
Then I had to excuse myself because I couldn't stop imagining this guy accompanying himself on a trumpet a la Banksey.

ROFLMAO -- Must be like so many other voice talkers out there. I heard one demo with a TV show playing in the background. Maybe the next guy you meet will be the one that records his demo on his answering machine. Well, it gives you the opportunity show how much better you are.

Did he mention how many sacks of money he'd gotten so far? |

I wonder if we're getting more of this type nowadays because of the cheap technology that seemingly levels the playing field.
The response to "I'm a Voice Actor [voice-over person, commercial voice, what-have-you]" used to be either
1. I've always wanted to get into that!
or
2. How do you get into that?
"Get into" always cracks me up.
Ooh--magazine publishing?

It could be much worse for running into occupational "compatriots". My first wife was a very good writer for magazines and other fine projects and it seemed like 50% of time when she revealed that she was a writer at a social event, the other person would say "I am too!" and tell how they'd been working on a novel off and on since grade school in addition to their regular job. Another goodly percentage would insist she ought to write romance novels..."that's where the real money is". She used to get ticked off easily and these people sure didn't help.

I got something like that yesterday, too. The contestant coordinator asked me what I did for a living, then perked up and asked "How did you get that job?"
It was so hard for me not to say "I just turned in my application, there was a short interview, et voila!"
Instead I said, it was "easy really-- just about $5000 in training, about that same amount in equipment, about $3500 in demo production, about 8 years of experience, and then bam!"
She was crestfallen. Maybe being a contestant coordinator isn't as glamorous as she had hoped.

Yep, a real overnight succes!
Bruce-- did your former wife also get people asking her to read their stuff?
That might be the deadliest possibility. One of my pals whos a playwright has had that happen so often that he lies now when people ask what he does. He just tells them he's a teacher or something. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

There is always this response to the "What do you do?" question. Look them square in the face with absolute sincerity and reply..."you know, I'm exceptionally lucky. I'm one of those few people who are independently dependent, how bout you?" |

Or be honest "I'm one of the 5% of people claiming to be a Voice Over who actually IS a Voice Over!"
"Yeah? Me too!"
"Really?" you reply checking the name badge "Umm, Carla. A large Coke with that and an extra portion of fries too". |

...and if they get a job that way, I say more power to them.
I've seen folks do more with less.
Now if they were wearing the headphone mic at the casting call..then we've got a problem. |

Yep, she got quite a bit of that too. She kept refering them to writing groups where they could share and get critiques of their material. I guess VO-BB is one of the closest things to that in our line of work.

Yes, thank G-d for VO-BB. And, by saying that, I suppose I've revealed that my Higher Power is, in fact, Deirdre.

Amy...Thanks for telling us about that "close encounter". All I can say is..."There, but for the grace of God, go I."
