Hey all, my first post and foray into getting professional feedback.

http://jeffreykafer.com/reels.asp

I'm particularly interested in the Audiobook and Animation reels. The commercial and coporate I know needs a lot of work.

Looking forward to blunt crticism for ways I can approve. The only criticism I won't accept is "give it up" because I don't intend to quit.

Thanks!

Unfortunately I feel that I can only comment on the commercial/corporate demo, since I don't do much in the area of audiobooks or animation at this time...

I think your corporate delivery has the best sound on that reel... one of the commercial reads sounded announcery(unless you were doing a tongue in cheek announcer parody, but if you were that needs to be made more clear on the demo)...also, that reel seemed much more corporate/narration-oriented. To me it sounded about 80% narration and 20% commercial, so I would suggest balancing out the content more if you're going to call it a commercial/corporate demo. This, along with some more music and SFX (where appropriate) would improve the flow in my opinion.

I liked the look and feel of your website. It seems simple yet professional and to me communicates a message of credibility.

Jeffery,

Just a quick note - and this relates to the website, not the demos. I will explain...

I would enjoyed the chance to listen to your demos, however...

When I am cornered by an unknown download or plug-in, I will opt out of downloading. Translating: I did not download the plug-in and have not listened to your demos.

Your clients and potential clients may or may not feel the same, thus this is a potential downside to how you have crafted your website.

Good luck my friend.

Toodles

Frank F

I do not specify to download a plugin. It will use whatever media player plugin you have, be that quicktime, Windows Media player, whatever. For those who don't have any plugin installed (which is rare), then there is a link right under each reel that says "Right Click to Download the file" which is a direct link to play the MP3 file. I guess I should look into other ways of embedding the files into the page. Thanks for alerting me to the problem you had.

Thanks to some suggestions by Frank in a private email, I've revamped my reels. Gone is the commercial one since there weren't any commercials in it.

The narration and audiobook have been merged into, wait for it, an Audiobook and Corporate Narration reel with some music on certain clips to help offset them.

I'm also now using a good 'ole flash player to play them so no one gets any security dialogs.

Big thanks to Frank and thanks in advance to anyone who listens!

Alright, I've made even more changes based on feedback. The Audiobook and Corporate narration reels are now separate reels and a bit longer.

I would appreciate any feedback you guys have! thanks!

I tried to listen a few days ago and nothing played. I tried again tonight with the same results.

Did the flash audio players show up? And hitting play didn't play them? What about the link below the player that says "Click here to download the MP3"?

It would be helpful to know what browser/OS you are using so I can troubleshoot.

I'm using Safari on Mac Tiger, OS 10.4.2

I can see the players all right, but when I clicked on the play button in the narration demo it said "paused" and changed to "streaming" but nothing happened-- the counter stayed all zeroes.

It seems to be the same with all the players for me in this config.

Also, just so you know-- you have a typo in your narration blurb.

Argh! I think I'm going to yank the browser player and just leave the link to the MP3 files. K.I.S.S.

Yessir, the player showed up, I clicked on the "Play" button and nothing happened. I am using the Firefox browser, it just updated again yesterday - so I am sure I am not running some old outdated stuff.

I don't remember seeing the link you mentioned - I'll go take another look. I'll be right back.

Okay, I'm back. I can click the other link either left or right clicking spawns the Quicktime player.

Nice job on the talking house and the......hmmmm.....was it labeled as corporate? Those two were nicely done. I'm not really one to comment on animation and that stuff, it just ain't my kind of thing - so I won't. The audiobook read was okay, but just okay. I don't mean to drop a downer on ya, but it just didn't have that natural flow and all that jazz. I can't really give ya much more than that, other than to say that it sounded as though you weren't really comfortable with it and I think that came through.

They all appeared and played just fine for me. (IE-6)

Thanks for the feedback, Don. Much appreciated. Your reply is interesting since audiobooks are my genre of choice. I prefer the long form stuff over the shorter. I think I might need to pick different clips that don't make me appear uncomfortable.

Thanks for the feedback!

Hi Jeffery,

Was able to stream the demos no problem in IE 6. Tried yesterday in IE 7 (at home) and had to save the files to my desktop as the players wouldn't load.

Not sure if you've changed anything from Thursday to Friday.....

No haven;t changed anything. I'm on vacation so not much access to Web authoring software right now. Still I'd love to have your feedback on the demos.
