The theatrical division of SAG/AFTRA has called a strike against production companies starting tomorrow morning. For those who are curious, this does not affect many of us in the voiceover world. Here's how VO-BB member Melissa Exelberth puts it:
Quote: | For all of my voiceover, narrator and broadcast friends and colleagues who've been asking if this will affect their work, this affects the TV/Theatrical contracts only.
It does not affect commercials, corporate, broadcast, audiobooks, dubbing, TV/basic cable animation, interactive or anything that doesn't come under TV/Theatrical. Basically if your work is under the TV/Theatrical contracts it's struck work. If you're not sure what contract you're working under, find out. Remember, voiceover is not its own entity. The work will fall under one of many contracts depending upon what it is.
For my non-union friends and colleagues here's this from SAG-AFTRA.
"NOTICE TO NON-MEMBERS: Any non-member seeking future membership in SAG-AFTRA who performs covered services for a struck company during the strike will not be admitted into membership in SAG-AFTRA." |
That last bit about non-union members crossing the line to take advantage of the situation is critical for actors who have long term plans.

Thanks for this, Bruce. I came here this morning specifically looking for this info. And thanks to Ex for always wording it right! _________________ 006 member of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Mic. Bonded by sound.

It's so great that Melissa is bilingual (SAG-AFTRA to English) and is able to translate for us. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

Never thought about that last part. Thanks Melissa for the explanation and Bruce for bringing it to our attention. _________________ Mike Paul

Well, we don't have a lot of strikes. Interestingly enough, the catalyst of the non-union vo industry was the commercial strike of 2000. I'm not sure how many snuck through the system, but dozens and dozens were denied membership because they took struck commercial. To be honest I don't know how much of a deterrent this rule is, as the industry is just too vast to be able to catch each and every person. It was a lot easier before the internet. It is far more enforceable with tv/theatrical work than with vo work. |
