Sometimes I think the V-123 subscription is worth it just for a good laugh
at some of the casting specs..... Take this current lead excerpt for example:

>> This is spec National TV commericial for Sam Adams Beer it will never air as its just a sample. We would like to pay the announcer as little as possible. In the event we will use your voice we will renegotiate based on usage. <<

Spec or no, it seems that sentiment is often the leading qualification in the World of 1-2-3.

(Wonder if their copywriting embodies the same subtle finesse : )

Happy Friday

We have champagne aspirations but will only pay beer wages. Prostrate yourself at our feet, voiceover peons.

I laffed out loud at this honesty.

I, personally, would like to pay the copywriters per seconds I have to breathe in a 30-second spot.

Sadly, someone is clicking the Reply button right now as if to say "Yes! Pay me as little as possible!"

A better response would be "I accept, provided all prducers involved are also accepting little or no money."

Maybe the response should be....I'd like some Sam Adams beer, but I only have these bottle caps to pay with...is that acceptable to you? I'd also like to use your services for an upcoming media blitz I have planned. However, I'm fairly broke and can only pay you in empty Sam Adams beer bottles. Please tell me, what kind of services can I expect from your company with these offerings?

You beat me to posting this, damn! I did laugh out loud when I read it. Imagine how a vendor would react if he heard the same thing from some corporate exec. "Yes we would like you to supply us with toilet paper, but we want to pay you as little as possible."

"Understood. As long as you don't mind a few wood chips here and there, and being shorted several hundred rolls, I think we have a deal."

DH,
(and others here)

I like your style, wit, sarcasm and all. Being the son of a Swiss native (they're all a country of rebels), I heartily concur.

So how do we get ahold of these twerps and tell them of our collective disgust?

Thanks, Dave. Snark courtesy of my Highland whiskey-soaked ancestors.

Alex T., proprietor of V123, has visited before and is, I think, well aware of the concerns voiced so often here about his outfit. How he's addressed the issues (or failed to, per your POV) is another can of worms, but at least he's been here and had some dialogue about it.

As far as the end client is concerned, I think we simply need to pay them as little attention as possible.

Yeah-- Now that V-123 has its own message board, they have a more dynamic way of settling stuff like this, or at least discussing it.

They should re-write it to read: "Wanted: Voice Artists with no self-respect"

They're all over. I just deleted a job posting on Guru.com. A chap from the UK was offering to pay the selected voice artist between $250 and $500 for a read of a 68-thousand word tome. I thought about answering, saying I'd be happy to narrate his introduction for that sum and we could set up a payment schedule for the other 9-thousand dollars. However, you get so many bids a month as a freebie member, and I felt I couldn't afford to go "Bruce" on him.

There is an older one I put on a watch-list that was 203 pages for less that $250. I am sure someone did it for that. He had paid as much as $185 in the past. We shouldn't focus so much on what the others are doing or charging, but what are "we" doing and charging.

If a thread is posted to that effect the majority are silent. I honestly believe that the line between a healthy interest and a unhealthy preoccupation has been crossed.
