Hey Gangie--

I had someone query me about coaching, but I'm not taking any new students right now.

Do you know of a reputable VO coach willing to take on someone just entering the arena?

Thanks!
Deebs

What genre of vo??

Mary Lynn Wissner is great for commercials, as are Dave Walsh and Jeff Howell. Dave and Jeff also coach promo. Harry Dunn is also great for promo. Bill Holmes is great for commercials. Debi Derryberry, Mick Wingert and Richard Horvitz for animation.

But if they've never studied acting or improv, I suggest they start there.

Bob-- They don't even know the genres of VO. I think they just want to get a grip on what it will take to practice.

Their level of experience is "interested".

I 100% agree about improv!
I recommend that to all my students who want to do any kind of character acting or public speaking.

Once the pandemic restrictions become less restricted, I'll be recommending improv again... and singing lessons, too.

When I was starting out, I researched coaches extensively. After narrowing it down to a few, I reached out to their students to get their opinions; most were eager to help. I'd give your friend a few names to start, then have them also do some searching on their own. I'll always throw out Nancy Wolfson for Commercial and Narration, if they can afford her and deal with her personality. Richard Horvitz is great for Animation and Games.

Workshops are also a great way to sample a teacher's style.

Workshops will be nice once we can move freely about the country again. ❤️

Everything is being done via Zoom these days. In fact, it has opened up companies like The Groundlings to folks outside of LA. Same for acting classes. I spent 2 years studying with John Ruskin.

Amazing acting teacher.

I do not see in person workshops happening anytime soon. I might never go back. I never did virtual coaching before Covid. Just didn't think I could do it justice. But I'm not just enjoying it, I'm finding it really great for both me and my students.

I would also forward this link to this interested party:
