I sent my demo to Internet Jock hoping to be added to their roster of talents. Here is the response I received.

OK, here is my stupid question: What exactly is a "more generic read"? _________________ Joe Rodriguez, Bilingual Voice Actor | The Voiceover Thespian Blog |

"More generic read" usually means no sponsor mentions.
Sounds bogus to me. It's hard to do a commercial demo without COMMERCIAL CONTENT. _________________ DBCooperVO.com |

Bingo. I took a couple of knocks for an early demo with a "Domino's Pizza" spot. I've never done an actual spot for them, but I thought it was pretty well understood that even beginning VOs need to at least sound as if they're playing with the big boys.
That said: if you know how to write and tweak copy, one can have a demo that doesn't mention sponsors. To my mind, however, that only works against you. Casting directors and producers realize full well that you probably haven't read for Ford; but if you deliver a "Ford spot" like a pro, then who's to argue that you aren't one?

My demo is there. It's titled Hello and Critique Request.

How about... Send people who have disregard for others, on a one-way trip, to a vacation spot they'll never forget. _________________ "Bailey"

I think they liked that read because
1. it was very well done and
2. it didn't mention a sponsor.
I don't think they want that one redone, they want more like it. _________________ DBCooperVO.com |
