I think it may be time for me to finally get a smartphone. But I have no idea what to look for. However, my needs are few, as far as I know.

I'm a Mac guy, but that doesn't mean I'm married to the idea of an iPhone.

Any recommendations? Thanks!

The co-operation between Mac devices makes the iPhone a very attractive option. They have an SE model out now that is only $400 while their fancier bells and whistles models are like $700 to over $1,000.

I am also a lifelong Mac user, but I do have to say my last 3 smartphones have been made by OnePlus. I love them.

I'm still rocking an old iPhone 6+ - before that it was a 4s.
There's no need to buy the latest if an older model will work for you. Just decide what size screen you need (I like the larger one). They are pennies on the dollar compared with the latest whizz-bang uber-fashionable new ones.

Whatever you decide, get one with the most onboard storage you can muster. My phone (an Android) has 16 gigs of internal memory and a 64 gig XD card, which I thought would be enough, but I was wrong. Only about 20% of my apps can be moved to the XD card (and they move themselves back to the phone whenever they update) and the ones that can't be moved take up virtually all the remaining available space. I literally have no capacity to add any more apps, and I had to delete a couple just to be able to download and install the most recent operating system upgrade.

Many thanks, guys!

Are the "Protection Plans" (extended warranty?) a good idea or, like for most purchases, is it just another way to spend more money?

As a rule protection plans are not worth it, but we’ve bought them on two Mac laptops over the years and used them with both computers.

Thanks. I think I will be ordering the iPhone SE when it comes back into stock at Consumer Cellular.

The iPhone will offer a better option for remote recording too, if that's something you do. I haven't seen anything yet that would suggest Android excels in that area. The Twisted Wave app for iPhone/iPad is an outstanding piece of software and highly recommended.
