I never considered it before. I've always billed narration by dividing the script's total word count by 150 (the avg word-per-minute rate).

Of course, when providing finished audio, the audio file is going to be a bit longer than that value.

I've occasionally received files from other VOs where second/alternate takes are included or where several seconds go by between spoken bits. I don't recall how they billed, but does it seem accurate to include this extra time in one's bill?

I price a job in five minute segments, but I estimate the length of the job by word count. So, for example, if I get a 1550 word script, I will assume the finished audio will be around nine to ten minutes. But even if it turns out, with pauses, to run eleven minutes, I'm still only billing for ten.
