anybody see any worry that i don't about this new AB5 law in CA?

it extends employee classification status to gig workers - supposed to make the A,B,C test more rigorous ... maybe? it looks to me like the same thing MA did several years ago - and i still work with MA folks all the time.

some CA vo-folk i hire on occasion have brought it up as a concern.

i don't really think it is.

Not really. I operate via an S-Corp, which means this law doesn't touch me in any significant way. For those who choose to remain sole proprietors, or who use an LLC, it may be another issue altogether.

It is very concerning for small video production companies and independent producers...dancers, small theaters, musicians who play at senior communities and much much more...

In my mind I am an independent contractor and I will continue to sell myself that way. You will not have to pay disability insurance or unemployment, nor contribute to my Health Insurance or pension.

I am a little concerned about my free lance writing for an educational grant based group that hires me to write scripts.

Opinions on various VO boards seem (as ever) split as to whether this will be an issue for voice actors and producers in California, or hired by those in California.

Here's the bill. I'm planning to read through it this week.

That's what I'm wondering. Because I don't see any way the state can compel non-CA businesses to comply with this. And for those of us in CA it seems that as long as you have a business license and have a normal v-o business operation, we should be fine.

It depends on that person's tax status. For me, as an employee of my S-corp, I am "loaned out" by my company for service. My corp is responsible for all payroll taxes etc. You are not.

Whether this holds true regarding other statuses, I can't say, but even for non-S-corp persons, the law does appear to allow for a number of jobs before you are recognized as an employer.

It does appear that our legislators are working hard to export as many working people as possible.

not to get too political, which is a no-no ... illinois is not much better (small-business-wise) and i have a 5-year plan to reverse-beverly hillbilly it, pile into the conestoga f-150 and head south to tennessee.
