Here's an interesting read from Paul Strikwerda on a new mic:

I liked it... quite a bit.... but I've got 4 mics as it is... all pretty decent.

Hadn't heard what actually happened when Samsung gutted the best legacy parts of their purchase aside from Soundcraft, whose consoles I have one of...
... I hope Austrian makes it fly.

Here's a further in-depth look at AA's mic in question

I thought the OC18 sounded really bad. It is very harsh. Especially with his ch and h sounds. And the sibilance...gross.

It isn't as smooth and natural as that Gefell.

I'm surprised it has so many favorable comments. With my every day engineering ears I just hated it. It makes me immediately think "What can I do with EQ to fix that?!" Which is a really bad start...at any price.

I'll hard pass that thing. And I'm a gear fiend and am always looking for and rooting for the new kid on the block.

The Gefell sounds significantly better to me, too. Though I don't think the AA mic sounds bad; to me, it just pales in comparison with the Gefell.

The last mic I tested was a Gefell UMT70s FET. I swore if my 416 ever broke down I would buy that Gefell. Just perfect. It cut like the 416, but wasn't as harsh on the ears over extended periods of listening. Closer to a U87, except that it still worked well in a small booth.

Me too. I'm thinking about picking one up for exactly those reasons.

I made a special trip to Vintage King to trial a Gefell UMT70s and walked out without it.

It sounds incredible on most people but for me, it just wasn't quite where I wanted it.

I was disappointed but better than wasting money. It really is a great mic and I keep thinking I'll try one again sometime.

I've almost pulled the trigger on the U87 a few times but I'm in a 4x6 booth and I've heard it's unhappy in "small" booths. I don't really know if 4x6 is considered a "small booth" or not. Sure doesn't seem big to me but I know some people try to operate in much smaller spaces.

Of course, I have a 416 that I thought would be the answer but for whatever reason, it's just not great for me.

It's like I'm cursed...

I enjoy going to VK but I can't tell what something is going to sound like from their testing booth. They're fine with you buying a mic and taking it home, testing it, and returning it if it doesn't work out. This is not terribly convenient, but I have found that for actually seeing how something will perform for me in my studio, it's a nice option.

Try a U87 in Figure-8 in a small booth, you might be surprised...

interesting. I was under the impression that a figure 8 would be horrible in a booth.

Thatíll be $20 for the advice, $3,600 for the microphone.
