I've been getting my share of spam emails from myself, which is still a bit unnerving. The "from" on these emails is my email address, but when I dig down into the "source" of these messages they actually come from a totally unknown and probably stolen address. They have just spoofed me as the sender.

My question is if I click the "this is Spam" button on these, does my email service eventually try to block the spammers email addy or my address? I worry enough as it is that my address is getting blackballed out there.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge on this!

I don't know for sure, but I'll offer a thought. I would avoid checking the spam box, but could you set up a rule that "junks" emails that follow the structure, subject, or other marker shown by the spammer?

I ain't no techie, just thinking out loud.

I still have my official domain email addresses but for three years have forwarded everything through Gmail. Their filters are amazing and will keep your Inbox clean.

I've had this happen, and was advised to scrub the web of my email address to prevent it from being harvested by spammers. After doing so, the instances of my account sending out spam eventually stopped. To do this scrubbing, first Google your email address by enclosing it in quotation marks. Once you find the pages your email address appears on, you'll have to either remove the address completely or put it in an unusable format that harvesters won't recognize, such as mike (at) mydomainname (dot com).

Good luck!

I have created an email rule that trashes anything that has my own name or email address in the "From" line. But since it is only a local rule on my email program, it doesn't affect anything further back in the chain than my own computer.

I would add the caveat that you should check your spam folder regularly for non-spam items. I almost lost a paying job last week because gmail helpfully filed it as spam, but I caught it in time to land the gig. I'm still glad for the spam filters, but your own eyeballs are better than the mighty google AI. ...For now. (cue maniacal laughter)
