Ever win an audition, record the script, receive a glowing compliment from the production company, get paid...and then the final client decides he/she doesn't like the VO track and they hire someone else? Just wondering how often that happens to VO peeps? Because, well, that stings!

Yep. Had it happen. The $$ is a good aspirin though.

I've had it happen more than once.

Getting paid is a win. When your ego can't distinguish success from your bottom line, it's usually a good sign your head is firmly planted in your bottom. Shocked

I have one of the best endings to one of those stories ever. Seven years ago, a rather prestigious jewelry company wanted to hire me for a web/in-store narration. My incredible agent took the "You want the best, you have to pay for the best" route in negotiations. Basically, using their own sales tactics against them. They paid $500 for a live audition which I passed. Then scheduled the session and agreed on a rate. The session took 15-20 minutes. Two weeks later my agent called and said a higher-up changed their mind and wanted a female instead. But, thanks to the signed contract they paid the agreed rate of $10,000.00.

I love my agents.

It seems there are agents...and then there are AGENTS.

Sweet story! And I'm glad those same agents got paid too after all that negotiating.

I had this happen with days of recordings for a video game.

Getting paid was par for the course but not being in the final release was a catastrophic blow to "success".
It is one of the biggest MMO's on earth. Ego or not, I'm pretty clear that my head is in the right place.

I would tell you about the many times I've been dropped unceremoniously from an ongoing account or replaced by someone of equal or lesser talent after one round, but I can't. I have worked very hard to forget those occasions.

You win some, you lose some is more than a catchy phrase, it's way of life in this business.

Indeed. For every time I've been dropped, there's another where I've been the guy coming in while someone else is dropped. Sometimes you enter and sometimes you exit the revolving door.

There was this time I had a really nice account for a couple of years, but was then replaced by some guy I had never heard of named Bruce Miles. When I heard the spots, it was clear he was of equal or greater talent, so what could I do but move on?

I experienced that scenario but from the hired to replace the original talent end of the job.
On a random Monday around 11am I got a call from a repeat client who had just returned from LA after doing a Sunday morning session to record narration for an IBM anniversary presentation.
After we'd finished recording the client told me he'd hired me to redo the narration that he'd just recorded in LA. The only time he could get the LA talent in the studio was early Sunday morning at 8am. And after 2 1/2 hours in the studio, paying the talent $15K per hour, he ended up with such a mess of mistakes that there was nothing usable worth editing together to create an acceptable narrative. The talent was a well known celebrity voice....Luke's father.
When the client told me he'd paid him $37,500 I laughed and said, "I'll do it for Half that!". lol. I charged him the standard Cat 2 rate.

I was the "voice of" a campaign for over three years... then was replaced with the traditional "Changing of the Ad Agency."

About a year later, I received an audition for said campaign, as they were replacing the voice that replaced me.

I got it, and was the voice for three more years. Till they replaced me again.

cool
