If you want to learn a martial art or to Box you are first taught how to fall, how to take a punch and how to defend yourself. If you fly then you are expected to spent countless hours learning how NOT to crash by doing "Crashing" practice. You are building muscle memory and robustness. You are enabling yourself to do something without thinking so that your conscious brain function is released from the mundane to concentrate on the important.

Personally, professionally, privately and publicly you will repeatedly crash, you will often be thrown or punched. In life as in work you need to be robust.

The following video is both deeply moving and the other thing it is also too as well.

Well said.

One of the most empowering things I ever learnt was being able to say, "It doesn't matter" and to really believe it. It's not just putting on a brave face and being all stoic about it ... it's truly believing that something really doesn't matter. An engine falling off and the aircraft plunging uncontrollably towards an unscheduled meeting with the ground matters. The fact that your co-pilot has an annoying whistle, doesn't.

Well put, Philip.

That's the sticking point, isn't it: it's not personal. That's the hardest thing for people to really internalize. It takes a while to be able to readjust the default response to "let it go and move on."

It also helped, back in the old days when I was doing on-camera work, to imagine my arch-nemesis as "that short, fat Asian lady." In my mind, she got all the gigs I auditioned for, but didn't get. It was soothing to imagine that it wasn't personal -- my audition was just fine (brilliant, in fact) ... it's just that I was neither short nor fat nor Asian, and that's the specs the client ended up going with. I know, it's weird and probably very racist. But it truly did help my 20-something-year-old self to learn to be robust; to do my work, and let it go.

I still don't like that lady.
