Turned down a "non-paying gig" just today.

Occasionally I will do something for free. But it is rare, and it is on my terms. And it's usually for a cause. Or if my sister asks me nicely. Wink

The trick is to know when to give a "no" that leaves the door open for future work ... as in, "It sounds like a really interesting project, but unfortunately, I'm unable to take on any non-paying work at the moment. If your budget changes in the future, I'd love to chat some more. Thanks again for thinking of me, and I wish you the best on your project."

So... what you're telling me is that my usual, "Bugger off you cheapskate numpty!" is probably not the best approach?

In certain (read: most) circumstances, that is most definitely the best approach. Especially in a British accent.

Sometimes a more delicate touch is needed. The trick is knowing when, and for whom.

This thread has got me thinking ... is there a difference in the way male VOs and female VOs deliver the "no" response?

In the wider world, a "no" from a woman might get her injured (if the rejected man happens to be a violent creep). This possibility can create a psychological minefield and verbal delicacy around saying "no." Does this show up in other circumstances where a woman must say "no"? Are my "not-exactly-a-firm-no" and Peter's "piss-off-and-don't-let-the-door-hit-you-in-the-arse" examples just illustrative of our gender perceptions of the "right" or "best" way to say no?

Just musing ...

PS: Yes, I knew you were kidding, Peter. Wink

I'm filing "cheapskate numpty" away for future use.
