Where? - producer’s home studio
Pro Involved? - Yup
Cost? - $850
Resulted in work* = No! Made the mistake of listening to a coach who said I was demo ready. I knew in my heart I was not. But who was I to argue with a professional? I’d spent 2 years studying vo. But I made a very expensive mistake. And I realized I needed acting training. So I went to an acting conservatory. Two years later:
Date? - 1982
Where? - LA studio
Pro Involved? - Yup
Cost? - $1200
Resulted in work* = Resulted in impressing a great agent. It took 5 years with this agent before I was able to make a living at vo.

Date? - 1975 - 2018 - dozens of demos
Where? - Various radio stations, home studio
Pro involved? - No, learned how to produce in radio stations
Cost? - copies on reel-to-reel, then cassettes, then CDs, now free mp3s
Resulted in work? - Yes, $25 a spot at first
Tempted to hire a pro demo producer finally to see how they’d do it differently

Cost? Maybe $100-200, if he bothered to collect it (I don't think he did)
Resulted in Work? Can't say specifically what, but yes.

In my case 4 days ago. National TV commercial. The pay day has an all important coma in the number.
I need to lie down, I feel another massive Yacht coming on.

Cost - ampex 407 "borrowed" from radio station & a few inches of tape.
Resulted in work* = yes. a guy who knew a guy said, "get me a demo & i'll give it to this other guy & he'll give you work." so - i made a demo from stuff already in the can.

In the “olden days” I got lots of work from my demos and an agent who went around putting her best talents’ tapes in ad agency hands. We also did a fair number of live auditions in offices and studios. When websites became common I got work from those demos too.
Today, because we can record at home, hundreds of us are forced to create fresh “demos” every week, unless we’re lucky enough to have agents that really work for us.

There is an ever increasing majority of agents and managers (BS and others) who simply are NOT doing their jobs.
+10%. 20%, monthly retainer or otherwise remunerated is NOT for forwarding emails. It is for promoting the careers of artist they claim to represent and for making connections with decision makers.

Pro: Hahhaaaaa, no.
Cost: Produced it while on the clock. So, I actually made money.
Resulted in work: Yes. My mother found a classified ad of an agency accepting demos for car dealer spots. I mailed one in and as luck would have it the agency creative director worked across the hall from me two years prior on WONE-AM. That job lasted 12 years. |
