Sometimes clients seem to assume we're not doing anything when they send a job and will appear annoyed that work on their job won't begin right away.

Please help me with some suggestions for handling this; i.e. how to explain it as painlessly as possible. It's very stressful for me when I have to tell someone they have to wait a bit.

What does the baker say when they have a new cake order ahead of yours? What does the busy auto mechanic say when you want an immediate repair?

like bruce says - you just have one mouth - you can only do one thing at a time - you also can't work 24 hours a day.

client: i need this tomorrow
me: i'm pretty backed up at the moment can i get it to you by EOD thursday?
client: (99 times out of 100) sure, that works.

when it doesn't work out ... well, ya win some, ya lose some.

Yeah, I suppose there is only one way to say it. I tend to cause the stress myself by trying to please everyone.

Thanks.[/i]

A face-palm update: Meh
Quote:
Client: How soon can we have it?
Me: I'll get started on it this evening; hopefully by tomorrow afternoon.
Client: OK.
Me: (after reviewing the script hours later) Hmmm... the last sentence of the script appears to end mid-thought. There is no period and it leads me to believe something might be missing.
Client: OH! Thanks for catching that! The last paragraph got cut off while copying and pasting.
Me: (still hours later) Thanks for the updated script. But I'm sorry to say that something new seems potentially conflicting: the paragraph you just supplied contains some of the same things said two paragraphs earlier. It seems to either say the same thing in a slightly different way or the two paragraphs contradict each other.

Mind-boggling: 40 years ago, when scripts were typed (on a typewriter), this kind of thing just didn't happen; at least not in my experience. Today, clients want things turned around ASAP and aren't crazy about the idea of having to pay extra for later revisions. But, despite having the various benefits of computers at their disposal, we get unfinished/unproofed scripts, causing everything to grind to a halt while they figure out what went wrong. Hurry up and wait 2018. Laugh

Sometimes being "Available" doesn't mean "100% Only For You" available.

Just sayin'.

"Philip, may I have it now?"

"No, so sorry about that!"

Coming up - Mike raises the topic "Was Moses the first VO to read from a tablet?"

As no one has rung in with a response, I'll have to reveal the answer: Yes. However, immediately after that first read, the operating system was completely changed to scrolls of papyrus. And, while the initial printing of scripts was less time-consuming, client changes were still quite tedious to make, especially during ISDN sessions.

Don't sweat it! I give a turn around date and time right when I accept the script. If they want it sooner then they have to pay for my time (with a few exceptions). I charge a rush fee that varies depending on the size/time involved. I've never had a complaint about it. I used to panic, too, but it wasn't worth the drain.
