are we all pretty much doing the Usual Cardioid Thing here, or is having a ribbon (or something-else) on hand, aside from a short-shotgun thing, all that is really ever wanted...?

I would love to have a buttery old ribbon mic like the RCAs I used in my early radio days, but I have no idea what Id use it for today. Im stuck in a rut using the shotgun 90% of the time and a CAD when I think I need something different. Not exciting but at least Im not having to add mic choice to my list of concerns.

i have a beautiful vintage RCA 77dx - completely rebuilt by Clarence Kane about 10 years ago - bruce is right "buttery" is a great description - but it sits (vertically & covered) in the closet.
