Why is the process so different?
My agent in the UK can send me an email saying, "client heard your reel, wants ta hire you, you want it? Pays a 1000 USD" Done.
Meanwhile here it's 300 auditioning for Hardees, and most of the time the rate (or the amount of people you KNOW are gonna submit for it) deems it not worthwhile in the first place.
Am I wrong in this assessment?
Perhaps it's just lil ol me. _________________ Tre@trespeaksforyou.com

Your assessment is depressingly accurate. My own reasoning as to why it's like this is simply that the UK talent are not interested in playing this particular game as much. The casting sites have concentrated on the big US market and have trained everyone to work in this manner. Not so much in the UK... but, unfortunately, it's changing. As long as talent wants to play this game, it will continue. When a new casting site pops-up in the US, there seems to be an unbridled enthusiasm from the talent... "Ooh look, more opportunities!"... when it happens in the UK, the attitude seems to more like, "OK, who are these opportunistic shit-heads?"
"Cattle call" used to be a pejorative... but in the US, it's business as usual. I'm afraid it will become the norm everywhere. The main European P2P prides itself on having no filters or restrictions... I looked at an audition the other day and there were over 200 responders in 24 hours... I'm not playing that game.
The UK benefits from being a smaller, more cohesive community. Geography dictates that VOs are more likely to have a personal relationship with agents, clients, and production houses... and this tends to limit the number of jobs that get thrown out to the masses... whereas in the US (the land of seventeen thousand permutations of coffee-based drinks in Starbucks)... having a massive choice is seen as a good thing... and the parasites feed on that belief. _________________ Bish a.k.a. If I would like to do something then I do the audition without blinking. Note: I tend not to want to do anything. PERSONAL - FOR ME.
Business - WE ARE IN BUSINESS. It's not called Show, it's called Show Business.
Actor goes to an audition for a play. This is am our roots. IF he gets the job then he will tread the boards for 13 weeks at the union rate. When was the last time YOU. Don't look at her I'm addressing YOU! When was the last time you auditioned for a job paying enough to keep you going for 13 weeks?
Mmmmmm thought so!
STOP IT!
UK Agent - Knows someone or a choice of 3 able to do the job. Tells contact.
US Agents(majority) Couldn't pick their VO artists out of a line up. Have no meaningful contacts.
P2Ps - Pickpockets who allow victims to use their own hands.
'tis the way of things. |

That's my thinking. Although, I'm not particularly happy that some past events have made me that way. _________________ Mike

Coincidentally, I had an on-camera audition today, where this exact thing turned up. They were asking for 2 years on essentially all media. The pay? About €500. I declined to sign "yes" where asked, and added my reasons in the margin.
It was worth the fun acting experience, and to see a casting director be happy with my work. Had business in the city anyway. |

And this is why I love my European clients. They either come to me with a job or they come to me asking permission to submit my demo and what's my rate for x usage. |
