I find the new rates for Interactive Video Game sessions interesting. You get a base rate plus an ever increasing bonus for each session you do. Producers also have to pay you an additional session fee if they use lines from an earlier version of the game in a new one. I guess that's why there are a lot of repeat lines in this new version I'm doing. My favorite provision is the requirement for a stunt coordinator to be on set in case one is needed. That Iranian Double Pause can be tricky!
Session 1, $850 + $75
Session 2, $850 + $125
Session 3, $850 + $175
Etc.
Here's a link to the PDF. Rates are on page 5 of the PDF. https://www.sagaftra.org/files/2017_interactive_refbklt.pdf

There was an old woman who swallowed a fly.
She was attempting the Iranian Double Pause at the time. |

Sounds right.
There were some mighty intense physical motion- and performance-capture demands being made of actors with no stunt co-ordinator present-- having one on-set was one of the pillars of the strike.

I don't doubt some actors feel the need to be enormously physical to be enormously emotional in certain voice only scenes. I've met them and been a little leery of them. I'm afraid I'm of the Laurence Olivier "my dear boy just try acting" school. My mind and my heart are all I need to thrash about convincingly for listeners, not my body.

Performance capture is like making a movie. Like your stuff for Disney, only in a sensor suit.

This scene HAS a stunt co-ordinator. Imagine the fights that didn't. _________________ DBCooperVO.com |

I don’t do performance capture for a few reasons. 1) I hate memorizing 2) I look lousy in Lycra 3) Not gonna work that hard for no residuals.
But for me, vo in animation and games is very physical. One of my mantras with my students is if you physically play the character the voice will follow. The amount of energy it takes to do this well is very tiring. You get the adrenaline UP when acting, then bring in back down for the direction. UP again on the next take, then down again. Etc. This UP and down takes a toll. When your characters struggle physically, you struggle. If your emotions are authentic this taxes you. And I’m the furthest thing from a method actor. But for truth in performance you need to invest physically. Otherwise you are just reading with enthusiasm. |

Amen. If you're performing from the neck up, you're just saying words.
Also, when you physicalize (and commit emotionally), you'll usually find that the voice comes out for free. *magic* _________________ * * * * * * * * * *

I love you my voiceover sister, but I take umbrage at your comment.
I've spent dozens of hours watching some of the best in the biz voice act, live and on video, and none of them, zero, used physical activity anywhere near big enough to require an onsite paramedic. Or even an aspirin for that matter.
Motion capture is another animal and does not count in this VO discussion.
To imply that very experienced voice actors can't successfully bring their life experiences, observations, and training to bear in a performance without dancing around like a trained monkey or a wounded buffalo is offensive.
Some of us apparently do need to gyrate, but a whole bunch of us don't and we're successful and get asked to do it again and again because we're good at it.
I'm putting my umbrage back.

I think I wave my arms around sometimes. I possibly conduct myself with a pencil that may (or may not) be beating the punctuation or emphasis in thin air. Anything more strenuous or energetic than that, I lose my head-lock on the 416's sweet spot.
MoCap is certainly a different animal... but don't they separate the physical performance from the recoding of the audio... or does everyone wear lavs or headset mics? It's a serious question... I really have no idea. _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

I think lines have become blurred between the running, jumping, leaping, and sword-wielding MoCap requirements (needing a stunt-coordinator)... and physical acting movements within the confines of a booth. My point about headlock on the mic was a serious one... plus, I've actually been in a booth where, if you had to scratch your backside, you needed to pop the door! Acting takes many forms... but I don't need to jump up and down with excitement to act like I'm jumping up and down with excitement. I think that's the pivot here... well, that and the word "physicalize" _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish
