Remember just a few years ago when Bill Gates and others suggested all of our computing power and storage would end up in this "cloud" in their data centers, and how our computers would just be terminals tied to a big bank of hard drives, and how we rebelled, verbally, at the idea of turning our data over to someone else?

Just got an email from my ISP suggesting I put all of my company's individual desktops on the cloud. It's safer and they can be reached by each employee from any terminal. And now Google and Apple's iCloud are each sucking a barely perceptible $2 a month from my bank account to pay for all my gigs of storage (so far). Times millions of captive users that does add up I guess.

See what I did there? A dark and shiny object to distract you from all the other unpleasant news out there.... for just a minute or so.

You're welcome.

i guess i'm the old man yelling "get off my lawn!" because i'm resisting at every turn. i use adobe's full suite - but i refuse to pay for CC. i backup everything (well, important stuff) locally AND offsite. i quit facebook in 2011 & quit twitter last month. apple stopped supporting chrome on my hackintosh which REALLY slowed down browsing - ticking me off - so i switched to vivaldi (which is awesome) AND i loathe google on a cellular level so switched to duckduckgo (which doesn't track you & has a fun name). if there were a local bank out there with NO online banking, they would have me as a customer.

I’d be tempted to change our banner up top to “RESIST!” but that has another connotation these days best left for other forums.

I hate it. It was and still is one of the stupidest most evil things big tech has done to us. I'm on the hook for $12.99 Canadian every month for Google Drive only because it would be too much bother to transfer everything to an external drive. (and I could have probably bought a half dozen high quality external drives on the money I've already thrown at google since I started paying for this idiocy, so don't anyone dare tell me about redundancy and efficiency. Horsehockey!)

Worst of all though is the SAAS (software as a service) garbage that all this cloud nonsense has enabled. I want to purchase software, not rent the damned stuff. And now they're even messing things up for the software that I own and paid for fair and square. For example, every time I try to open a pdf document, the perfect-for-my-every-needs pro version of Adobe Acrobat I bought just before Adobe went all-in with the cloud bs (and which I had set as my default pdf program) is always bumped and shunted aside - my pdf documents are unfailingly opened instead by the garbage free cloud version of Acrobat (which can't annotate or do any of the handy things I paid big bucks for the pro version to do). I tried to reset my pdf default viewer to the pro version, even uninstall the newer version, but sure as shooting, my computer finds a nice helpful way to make the cloud-based garbage version my default again every time. Grrr! Rage!! Grrr! Get orf mah lawn (and Todd's)

I've never thought the cloud concept was a good idea. The notion that information about me and which belongs to me, and/or anyone with whom I have personal or business relationships, is potentially available to others and which is not under my sole and direct control is ludicrous. This is a bank whose "vault" consists of an ordinary room with a typical home window as its door and maybe a dog outside it.

To me, the interception of bank data from retail card terminal transactions and all the other hacking so frequently in the news over the past 15 years or so was warning enough.

Thank you, but no.

As long as it's properly encrypted, I have no issue with backing up my data with a service like Carbonite. But even before it was given the innocuous name "Cloud," I have never liked the idea of my software residing anywhere but on my own computers. For me, security is further down the list of issues than at least a couple of other things.

First is reliability. When I first became aware of the concept of remote computing, I was still connecting to the internet with a 28k baud modem. What if my internet, or my phone line went down? I'd be unable to use my software until it came back. These days, I can tether my smartphone to my computer as an emergency work-around, but the internet connection can still disappear for a few minutes or even a few hours. It doesn't happen often, but it can still happen.

My second, and major, objection is what more and more companies like Adobe are doing or trying to do: charge a subscription for nothing more than what used to come in a box. If I subscribe to a magazine, I at least get a new issue, with fresh content, each month. With the current version of Adobe Audition, it's the equivalent of them continuing to send me fresh copies of the same magazine I already had a copy of before they started charging for the subscription. And the way they bundle their services, I probably have to buy four other magazines in languages I don't understand in order to get the one I want. And that's why I still use Cool Edit. Gasp

What Lee said about Adobe. I'd subscribed to their nonsense for a year and then, when they decided to raise the price (it's not cost-effective if using only one application), I bailed and reverted to Audition CS6. When it's usable life ends, I'll go elsewhere.

And I still use a (very) functional Audition 3.0 so my guess is version CS6 has considerable shelf life left in it.

As I said, I'm still using Cool Edit, which is, essentially, Adobe Audition 1.0. It came out in the last millennium. I use it on Windows 10, and its usable life has not yet expired. If I could find a hard copy of Audition 3.0, I would consider upgrading to that, just for the few enhancements that I might find a use for, but I will never pay what amounts to ransom to continue using a product I bought and paid for.

I hope you'll all forgive me the Simpsons' reference to describe a goodly number of us here (myself included!), but I can't resist...

I resemble that.

Several years before my Dad passed, he'd begun complaining about something I'd never heard him, nor anyone else, complain about before. I had to agree with him, but it would be a hugely expensive undertaking (and guess who would wind up paying) to bury all the electric, telephone and cable TV wiring and transformers that make for those ugly utility poles that line our roads and highways.

But, now... back to the cloud.
