Perhaps most of our VO-BB family has seen the now-legendary 1997 TV commercial for Apple Computer, "Think Different," voiced by Richard Dreyfuss. It was the first commercial to win an Emmy(R). But if we forget that they are from a TV commercial, the words of the script might be inspirational to the younger "movers and shakers" among us.

Apple - "Think Different"

Despite what many believe, the script was not written by Steve Jobs; although a version of the commercial was produced with Jobs doing the VO (it did not air). As the actual writer, then-TBWA/Chiat/Day's Rob Siltanen, says here, he wrote the script after having seen "Dead Poets Society" and, further, hoped to have the film's star, the late Robin Williams, do the VO. While that didn't pan out, Robin Williams was chosen for another job:

the 2000 Olympics "Celebrate Humanity" campaign.

I initially wanted to share some inspirational words, but wound up also highlighting some brilliant voice-over work.

Here is the full text from the manifesto that Rob Siltanen wrote, from which the commercial script was taken (with slight modification):

Quote:
To the crazy ones.
The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers.
The round pegs in the square holes.
The ones who see things differently.
They're not fond of rules.
And they have no respect for the status quo.
You can praise them, disagree with them, quote them,
disbelieve them, glorify or vilify them.
About the only thing you can't do is ignore them.
Because they change things.
They invent. They imagine.
They heal. They explore. They create. They inspire.
They push the human race forward.
Maybe they have to be crazy.
How else can you stare at an empty canvas and see a work of art?
Or sit in silence and hear a song that's never been written?
Or gaze at a red planet and see a laboratory on wheels?
While some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius.
Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world...
are the ones who do.

Please, may we have more crazy ones?
