Our studio outside building heats up pretty fast in summer - and while we have a.c., too noisy to run while narrating. And as Ulf is working on an audiobook, that's a lot of time to swelter. Just found a solution - big bowl of ice in front of the ventilation intake outside the booth and another one inside the booth in front of the fan. The ventilation can be run at low speed without compromising audio quality, unlike the a.c. Got to stock up on large amounts of ice for the rest of the day. |

Our condo's lower floor has condos on two sides, we're up against a hill on one side, and there's a thick forest between us and the school on the other side. Great external sound deadening in my studio downstairs most of the year. However the whole house AC compressor sits right outside my window and roars when it's on. All long form narration gets done in the morning or short spurts later in the day when I turn the AC off for a while. Sauna time!
It'll be 96º or so today in Portland. That's a lot when our highs have mostly been in the 70s.

When we first moved to northern Oregon in 2007, everybody assured us "Summers are so mild, you don't need a.c. up here". Delusional. Or maybe just living in the past. Total myth.

Living in Portland since 93 I always needed AC. Some years not as much as others but it is a must. The later years before I moved in 2012 were getting increasingly hotter. |

On moving to Portland, OR, this spring, we were advised to get an AC unit for our apartment.
Being from Los Angeles County, we thought, "How cute. They think it will be 'hot' here." (After 21 years of dog-melting heat and rock-cracking dryness in the LA summertime, I think I got a bit jaded and lofty about heat one-upmanship. I experience similar feelings regarding "traffic.")
But it does indeed get hot in Portlandia. And right now, on the 3rd day of 100-ish degree heat, I'm really glad we sprung for the unit.
This global-warming business is for the birds. You know, the ones who haven't yet spontaneously combusted mid-flight.
PS: Folks who live in Las Vegas or similar climates can definitely claim advanced experience in the "heat" category, above and beyond what a former LA gal like me can claim. Good Lord, but it's unearthly hot-n-dry there. Wow. _________________ * * * * * * * * * *
