Liz +1
I believe Amy has mentioned late August 2019 as a potential Faffcon 10 date. I would so love it if Liz and I finally got to spend our mutual birthday together -- along with a couple hundred of our closest friends. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

Of course many of us are hoping it will be a return to the first Faffcon location, beautiful Portland, Oregon.

That was my thought, too, Bruce Neither Ulf nor I could attend due to Faffcon rules about previous attendance - however, if friends I haven't met in person yet come here, I was hoping to snag some of them for a lunch or dinner at that time. (Lookin' at YOU, Ms. Liz! ) |

At the time of #9, Lauren was pregnant and still living in NC (although planning to move to PA), and Amy had just moved to NC. She mentioned that Faffcon 10 would most likely be close to that area to minimize the disruption to the lives of the organizers. I took that to mean that it could go right back to Charlotte, or maybe, in light of Lauren's relocation, a return to Hershey. And in my own head, I threw in Baltimore as a possible central location.
But all that was when Faffcon 10 was still expected to happen in 2018. It has since been announced that #10 will be some time in 2019. Lauren has now moved to the Keystone state and had her baby, and by then, she will have more than a year of motherhood under her belt, so perhaps keeping the event within such a tight radius may not be the priority it once was. I guess we'll have to wait and see. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

I think we're running the risk of over-analyzing things here. Faffcon #10 will happen where and when Amy chooses. I think we're running the risk of presuming too much when we talk about it as a certainty. Amy may have decided her life will be better without the drama of Faffcon... Lauren is now a wife and mother. It's not just a case of where & when... we should be prepared for it being a case of if, where & when. People re-prioritize their lives and owe us nothing. If they decide to move on it will be disappointing... but we should just be grateful to them for the nine we had. _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

Voice direction - Calm measured, friendly tone pausing only to sip from a large glass of red wine, probably a Margaux.
Talking to a friend a few weeks ago she explained that her ex-husband was an expert in plastics/polymers and stuff like that. He was regularly invited to speak to other people in his field. As an employee this took him away from his employment as a Polymerist, during which he would ploymerise or sometimes plasticise. His company lost him and received no work for full pay. His peers or the organisers would pay Pete, for t'was his name, a fee and his expenses. The rules of exception were as follows.
1- You wanna know what Pete knows then pay a fee and expenses.
2- Don't want to pay. Find out what Pete found out on your own.
As people who do voice over work to some degree or another we regularly are found in Prada Sackcloth and ashes tm when we hear of someone doing a VO job for nothing or low balling, We complain bitterly about the pay to play sites for lowering standards then, after a short pause justify leeching the knowledge of a professional colleague based on completely bankrupt excuses.
I know that in the real sense of the word we are not in a Profession but fully accept the spirit in which the term is used. Should we choose to self-define as professionals we lose the right to be selective when earning, learning and investing(spending).
Education must be valuable and measurable. Should a friend call me for my thoughts on something that may bring value to their business I'll tell them what I know. The people who call are friends, literally only several, and acquaintances. The latter will be given an approximate compass heading and are then left to work the rest out for themselves.
The real problem in our business is there are too many people propping up a market which should be self-supporting. Help by all means but know what helping means. Should I need professional advice, I'll pay for it. When a professional organisation for our business comes into being, I'll join it. The latter comment written with the greatest of respect for the people who spend their time, at their own expense, trying to build WOVO into something meaningful. SAG-AFTRA is simply a union so doesn't apply as it covers a multitude of disciplines , the same goes for Equity, the UK union.
We need to be inclusive and need to be selective, not elitist, in who we include.
If you really want to strengthen the (voice over) economy those with influence or in leadership should not persist in attempts to devalue the currency. |
