You're missing a preamp in that chain. What supplies the phantom power to the mic?

This IS getting confusing.
As it stands, the positioning of the dbx166 between the 416 and the iD22 is illogical because (as far as I can see) the dbx166 neither supplies nor passes through the phantom power required by the 416 (as Steve noted). The iD22 is a great preamp/interface (which supplies the required phantom power). It also has insert points which invite the connection of external processing units (such as the dbx166).

The chain should logically be:
416 to iD22 mic channel 1 (phantom power switched on)
iD22 send 1 to dbx 166 in
dbx 166 out to iD22 return 1
iD22 USB to MacBook

For logical fault finding, the first thing to do is simplify your chain as much as possible. The dbx 166 is a complicating factor which needs some clarification regarding its connectivity. Lose it. The chain will then be 416-XLR-iD22-USB-MacBook. Referring back to my chain in an earlier post, the first thing I would do is lose my Radial switch... it's a secondary piece of equipment and not necessary for recording. Removing it while trying to identify a problem would be my first step... then check the prime components by substitution.

What are you saying? He's got a 416T? T(ea) power rather than phantom power?

If it is a 416T, that would make sense in the chain as described... but as it stands, the information is sparse and somewhat impenetrable.

How old is the audient? They replaced mine when it was still newish without a quibble when I was having mystery noises (of a different sort) that I couldn't pin on a mic or cable.

It's not a 'T'. Phantom power provided by the Audient.
166 is for noise gate.

OK, so your signal chain is what Bish posted above then?

Why is a raven like a writing desk?

I THINK I've gotten it solved.
I attached an external drive and change my scratch recording path to it. Haven't had any 'pops/crackles/etc.' since.
Sooooo, fingers crossed?
Thanks Deirdre for the suggestion. Thanks everyone for your help.

Sound's back. Weird because I haven't changed a thing in either the signal chain, software, fx plugins, whatever areas.

Is the external drive assigned as the record disc?

Hey Deirdre,
Sorry for the delay....

Yes, the external drive is assigned as the record path.
