So, I was recording yesterday and my voice got strained really quickly (I think my throat was tense for some reason). What do you all do to keep your voice in good shape for long recording sessions?

It could be you are forcing your voice to sound a certain way which will strain the vocal folds quickly. Relax your throat when you read. That's why they say when you have laryngitis don't whisper. That kind of manipulation hurts your voice box and slows healing.

Much of your vocal power should come from your torso, your diaphragm. In theory your mouth and vocal folds should just shape the air as it comes out. Practice deeper breathing when you read and in general practice more. Well exercised muscles perform longer.

true-dat!

i started doing long-form stuff about 8 years ago. when i began i could barely go an hour at a time - now it's not uncommon for me to go 1/2 a day, take a couple hour break & go the other 1/2 without a noticeable difference in sound from beginning to end.

Hum Happy Birthday for 5-10 minutes. It will reset your vocal placement out of the throat and into your "mask." If your teeth and nose are vibrating, that's where you want to be.

water and warm up.

I do a few long form narration sessions each week and usually try to rest my voice prior to the sessions if I have enough open time. Then I warm up with some pre reading before linking with the client for the session. But I keep fresh water on hand during the session and stay hydrated as needed.

We warm up in my singing group class with a straw. Vocalize scales, blow some bubbles. Here are some videos...
