I bet the sound of my neighbor's leaf blower could still penetrate it.

a couple of (admittedly eriously technical) references

https://www.nist.gov/sites/default/files/documents/calibrations/jasa64-2.pdf

https://www.nist.gov/calibrations/acoustic-measurements-calibrations

these are all at a VERY VERY low level of reference-reality...

When Fox Animation was headquartered in Phoenix in the late 90's I recorded some scratch tracks for them in their audio studio. It was smaller but similar to an anechoic chamber with lots of wedges of black foam on most surfaces and a few pillars of black sound treatment material you walked past to get to the mic. It was disturbingly quiet and quite spooky.

I once spent about five minutes in an anechoic chamber at Ball Aerospace. Do you have any idea how NOISY your blood is? Wink

At the corporate multimedia production house for which I narrated and produced audio in the late 1970s, our clients included every component of what had been the Bell System: AT&T, Western Electric, Bell Labs (all headquartered nearby) and even some of the individual local telephone companies. As a nerd, I was a kid in a candy store working with these people.

That's when I learned of the anechoic chamber built in 1940 at Bell Labs' Murray Hill NJ facility.

The technological innovations of Bell Labs are responsible for much of what we enjoy and even take for granted today. For example, the earliest network TV signals were sent across the country first using the copper AT&T telephone network and Bell Labs' broadband microwave technology. In the early 60s, when TV went to satellite, events in other countries that were previously shot on film, flown back to the US, processed and aired the following day are now transmitted live with a delay of only several seconds.

More great Bell Labs history:

Not in the least. I have it in both ears and it was so loud I could hardly stand it. Combined with the pumping of blood in my ears, the whole experience was very uncomfortable.
