My wife and stepdaughter and I have been in our new house since May. Everything was beautiful...nice neighbors, good area, I can sit and grill outside and have a cold one, lovely. Then Irma.

Small, but dangerous hole in roof, causing the walls in the foyer to "cry." Had an adjuster come take a look and said someone would be in touch. That was September. December is approaching, and I can't so much as get a status. Run around ad nauseam (sp?) raised all kinds of hell, and still nothing.

We come home from a bad rainstorm, and thankfully my daughter woke up in time to put pots near the windows. Had to throw my cats bed away because it was wet and moldy. Now I gotta call my buddy who is a carpet cleaner to come and sanitize this area. My wife has been treated twice for upper respiratory infections. My throat has been scratchy which affects my work. I been just, sitting here, watching it fall. I feel helpless because as the "man of the house" I can't do shit.

Two days before Thanskgiving...sucks is an understatement.

I'm usually one of the most positive cats around, but tonight?

This is not one of those nights.

I'm sorry y'all, don't mean to bring the room down, I can't even LOOK her in the eye.

My heart goes out to you Tre. I've gone thru many a hurricane and considered myself fortunate to be around afterward. It's not easy to speak your piece when things go bad.

Irma was a big one and I'll be sending good spirit your way.

i get the frustration. a few years back we had an inland hurricane, a "derecho", here - 14 trees went down around & on my house. a 10"x20' pine tree top shot through my garage roof like a SAM missile - sticking out like a christmas tree. it was pretty - but not very functional.

sometimes we can only do what we can do.

as a good friend of mine used to say - "either it is or it ain't."

That was a heck of a storm and I gather it's been keeping home repair people throughout Florida real busy. If lots of folks around you are still waiting for repairs then I guess it's fate and/or many people with worse problems are ahead of you on the list.

If your insurance company or the roofers are disorganized or inept I guess you could contact the state insurance commission or even the state attorney general office.

Thankfully we don't have hurricanes in the Pacific Northwest. Just a looming 9.0 earthquake and giant tsunami sometime in the next 50 years. Or the Yellowstone Park super volcano which could ace millions in just a few weeks time. As Roseanne Rosanadana used to say, "It's always something."

i'm just an old country boy - but if the insurance has got you down for a new roof already - i'd consider buying a bundle of shingles and doing a "make-do" patch - then completely cover the patch & surrounding area in some good roof-goo like "through the roof".

And remember, just because you are "the man of the house" doesn't mean you are also the roofer, plumber, electrician, carpenter, accountant and auto mechanic of the house.

I agree with Bruce. Hurricanes have not been a part of my life since 1967. By living in California you may have to deal with earthquakes and fires. Earthquakes are fun for about 6 seconds. When it continues, thats when you want to get off the ride. Fires can wipe you out or be a big inconveniace. Ten years ago we spent 2 nights at Qualcomm Stadium with lots of people while the fires skirted our areas. No damages to us, but plenty of homes were lost.

That really sucks but as Deebs said just because you are "the man of the house" doesn't mean you are also the roofer, plumber, electrician, carpenter, accountant and auto mechanic of the house.

Half the men I know wouldn't know how to do any of that - and it doesn't make them any less men. You're too hard on yourselves . We - women, that is - don't judge men on all the supposedly "manly" things they can or can't do. One can always hire someone to do all that stuff. Finding someone you really connect with? Priceless. So don't be so hard on yourself. Look her in the eye and envelop her in a big hug.

I'd try what Todd says about buying shingles and doing a patch. Or pay someone to do that.

Yes, it could have been. I was in Mexico City in 1985 during the 8.1 earthquake that killed thousands, actually it was tens of thousands. I'd left Televisa's Chapultepec studios to walk home about 20 minutes before the part of the building I was in was crushed. I'd just gotten home when the quake happened. The hotel I'd walked by just a few minutes before collapsed onto the street where I'd been. I don't mean to minimize in any way what you're going through because it really sucks - but "it could have been MUCH WORSE" has gotten me through every sucky moment I've ever had since then. and while the moments still suck - they're not tragic.

It also helps to have people. Which you do. This place - the VO-BB - has been my people during not-great-times. And being able to vent - here - among your peeps - priceless.

xoxo

Ex, I remember that quake...man, what a story. I can't fathom what that had to be like. As for my wife, she understands...she was the one who came and gave me the big hug and said I don't HAVE to do EVERYTHING. I am taking Todd's suggestion under advisement though.
