I know I've seen people mention a couple software packages that help with long form. When you have properly formatted elearning and the software can sort of walk you through section by section and record, name, etc.

I'm getting more and more long form and I need a better way to handle multi file jobs.

I currently use Audition and add a marker at each file, then combine and export as separate files which isnt too bad but I hate going back to name all of the markers.

I googled a bunch of different searches and cant for the life of me get anything to show up that is relevant. My google is usually pretty strong :(

Recommendations?

Thanks

Italian, used for editing, file splitting and naming, costs 30 Euro per hour. Her name is Adriana.

I use audition as well... Range Markers with pre-fix is what I use. If I understand correctly, you are trying to avoid the actual re-naming of the sequential range markers. Using the pre-fix for the module name and sequential marker numbering, the following is easy:

Evisceration_Techniques_Mod01_Marker 01.wav
Evisceration_Techniques_Mod01_Marker 02.wav
Evisceration_Techniques_Mod01_Marker 03.wav

I usually go in at the end of the module and change the slide name to what I want prior to export (e.g. change "Marker" to "Slide" or just a simple number)... it's a simple paste function. Depending on what operating system you are using, it may be easier to leave the "Marker 01" etc. in place and use the OS file rename utility where it's easy to change the word "Marker" to anything you like. The OS routines are usually quite powerful.... more than the Audition file/marker handling system.

So, sequential renaming of files is easy as long as you get the prefix correct. If you want non-sequential naming of files, "cat", "dog", "gibbon", etc... then get Adriana's email from Philip.

Bottom line... sometimes it's easier to leave the marker with it's regular sequential name and use the OS batch file rename to change it.

I use Audition and I will typically just create a file (cmd+shift+N) type or past the file name protocol (or as stays the same) and record the first slide, then create new file, paste name add the little bit to the name, record the slide. After developing the muscle memory, I don't have to think about the creation of the file so the is no renaming at the end. This also makes it easier (in my mind) and quicker to add add 1 second at the head and tail (or whatever people want) by copying one second of room tone and just pasting it at the head and tail.

That was more than you asked...but I've gotten pretty quick at it and don't need to hire anyone or buy any software.

thanks for the tips. However, there are a couple software packages that are specifically made to simplify the workflow. I've seen people mention them on here and for the life of me I cant find them. I wanted to check out the features to see just how much, if at all they'd help. I'm pretty fast as it is, but I'm always looking for faster when it comes to administrative crap.

I know there are 2 of them that "compete".

Word2Wav is the one most people use -- it's for PC. Not sure if there's a Mac equivalent... maybe VoXover...?

I think the other one is called "Read2Record" (I see a pattern here).

I think they are helpful when doing a boat-load of IVR prompts. I do a lot of elearning and I've never had a project so arduous or file heavy that I've considered it worthwhile to use another program (and workflow) for recording to enable the file splitting at the start of the process. I record, and then proof, correct, and master the whole module, then split. If I had to juggle 100 separate files it would send me crazy. For me, it's more natural splitting at the end, after any QC.

I use both W2W and R2R.

They both work great for recording and separating files as you go. And Todd is right, for many many IVR prompts with unique file names, this kind of software is the way to go.

For sequential prompts that I have recorded in one fell swoop instead of separately, I also use a very old - and not cheap program called Vox Studio - which I got years ago to do a large monthly project with an unusual file format. It will take .wav files and split them up and easily name them. It doesn't import a file with the unique file names unless you format it very very carefully (but it can be done).

I used to use it to do the finishing and formatting, but Audition does that quite well with scripts and batch processing.

Yes, W2W and R2R for tons of uniquely named files. They've saved me a ton of time. W2W is a one time purchase. R2R is a license. Either of them work really when you have hundreds or even thousands of files.

I only have to deal with "File Separation" if and when I add more files.

Word2wav is great, but I wish there was a version for Mac. Can't get along with the other one at all.
