A dozen or so years ago, erring on the side of caution, I actually contacted our fine State Department to ask whether it was OK to do business with a studio in the United Arab Emirates (Dubai, specifically). Hey, what do I know about such things? The answer in that case was that it was OK.

Now, because I really have no confidence in anything our government says, much less on the topic of conducting business with other countries, I don't know of any reliable sources to check with.

With very recent events involving another Middle Eastern country (and its apparent close ties with one or more countries in the news for less than positive reasons), I've just received a request from, and want to find out if it's OK to do business with a studio in Turkey.

Or... do I really even WANT to get involved in something that could prove complicated in other, non-political ways?

Your thoughts?

Thanks!

I've worked with a gentleman in Turkey for years now (not the one mentioned in Entre Nous) and it's been a fine relationship. With a very few obvious exceptions (say Kim Jong Un) it's fine to do non-political work for legit producers anywhere. Just follow the same caveats you do with new-to-you clients here in the US.

When it comes to doing business these days the world is flat thanks to the Internet. Enjoy the expanded opportunities!

Yes, there are countries that are off-limits. Europe, especially Scandinavian countries, are off-limits to you, and every other male voice talent from the US between the ages of 30 and 70. Wink

An audible snicker, you have drawn, sir. Smile

But then I'm not sure one can snicker silently.

Technically, it's fine to do work for Turkey. Morally... depends on the Turkish client. I auditioned for a "documentary" put forth by Turkish state television last year and won the gig. But when I saw the script, I realized it was nothing but anti Kurdish propaganda designed to stir up religious/ethnic hatreds. I said "no thanks" in the end and felt pretty good about it.

No, because then it becomes a sneaker.
