Some of the best booth directors I've known told me to take off the cans and I'll be damned if the reads weren't better. (I'll probably be damned in any case but that's another matter.) I find it depends on what I'm trying to accomplish, but I generally at least go one ear and often go canless. Which sounds dirtier than it is.
