Back when I was in college I was dating a girl that had a nasty bite on her knee. Ended up in the emergency room as it turns out it was from a Brown Recluse.
We've got Black Widows around here too. Seems like somebody on my street is always finding one. It's scary what with all the young kids around here. _________________ Hart Voice Overs Blog

The good thing about Brown Recluse is.....well...there's really nothing good about having them, but they are not aggressive. most bites occur by accident....they are nocturnal...they only come out of hiding at night to hunt for food or mate.....they like stacks of clothes...or shoes etc.....most bites occur while people are sleeping....the spider is out hunting for food and gets on the bed and the person rolls over on top of it and then gets bit...or puts clothes on without shaking them out first. That type of thing....they don't go out to feed on or bite people...they will avoid you whenever possible. _________________ TG2

Maybe, after I find the cricket, I should tidy my bedroom...

Amy, I think the vacuum cleaner idea was a good one....that will take care of your problem right away. Of course you'll have to immediately get rid of the bag. before you do, I suggest you find where it is loudest, and hold your microphone real close to the source of the chirping. record some good loud chirps....then play with some plugins or effects and make some cool sound effects from it. hahahahaha _________________ TG2

Brown recluse my a...... no wait a minute that wouldn't be good at all!
But, seriously folks, I have known a few people that have been bitten by the most wicked BR...but thankfully none have suffered the way the pictures of bites are potrayed on the internet.
Secondly, I grew up in Oklahoma and everyone had TONS of these guys around the house...except...back then they didn't have the reputation they do now. (I never heard the term "brown recluse" until the last 15 years or so) Heck, we just squahed all spiders if we got the chance...it didn't matter what their name might be
I must admit though, we did learn at very early age to ALWAYS shake out our shoes/clothes etc before getting too cozy. _________________ . If at first you don't succeed, then bomb disposal probably isn't for you. |

warning: Glory Days story ahead...
When I worked at KZEP in San Antonio, the station had a real cricket problem. The studio was next to the back door of the building and somehow, HORDES of crickets managed to get into the building and the studio. One night, the noise got so bad that I mic'd the critters with the guest mic in the studio and used them as part of every break I did. Sounded kinda cool, but unfortunately, I didn't roll tape. _________________ Greg Littlefield

Brown recluses can be nasty though. An old school chum of mine lost most of the skin off the back of his hand and had to have grafts to cover. He's a lowyer too. Would have sued the hell out of the bugger if he could.

Cricket's gone. I employed the cat.
Now there's a fly. All kinds of wildlife to contend with, all of the sudden.
Mary warned me about building this booth 'out of doors.'

Crickets can be loud, but at least they're harmless. I too, know of more than one person who ended up in the hospital because of a brown recluse bite.
Now, just for "ick" factor...those crazed flying roaches! I hate those things & fortunately only encounter them a couple of times a year outdoors. However, as a kid visiting my cousins in Houston, I remember spending many a summer night screaming because a big ole roach suddenly flew outta nowhere, headed right toward us! Still creeps me out just thinking 'bout it. _________________ Mary |

There’s lots of wildlife in rural So. California. We live in a eucalyptus forest about 20 miles from San Diego. There are coyotes, foxes, bobcats, and an occasional mountain lion; and yes, snakes. But, we haven’t found any rattlesnakes on our hill nor have our neighbors in over 20 years. My wife has been bitten by a brown recluse, a black widow, and stung by a scorpion (none of these attacks were at this home). There tarantulas here are pretty harmless. There is something in her chemistry that attracts critters. Even if there is a flea or spider around her it will walk right past me making a beeline for her. We will stay out of the jungle, thank you.
