I was riding with a friend a few months back and as the commercial segment began to run on the radio i reached over and cranked up the volume. He gave me this kind of, "what the...." look. I told him that I really liked this commercial and he just kind of gave me this blank stare and said, "its like i dont even know you any more".

I'm sure that plenty of you do the same but it's a side effect that I'd never have imagined before digging into the profession.

I went from years of hating and mocking advertising of every type, to only turning the radio on to hear the commercials.

The odd thing is that some of my friends (including the one riding with me a few months back) and family now pay special attention as well; pointing out spots they like, hate, and believe that I could have done better.
My wife actually DVR's some shows just so that I can see a commercial somewhere in the middle.

It's all very fun and very strange.

The curse is riding with a VO and he turns up the volume on the car radio so you can hear a commercial he did.

We need a check list so that people, US, YOU and I know when we are being Voice Over Bores.

I absolutely agree with the "turning up to hear the commercials." I've been guilty (and aware) of this phenomenon for years. What's even more embarrassing is when someone catches you mimicking the voice you just heard automatically without thinking there is anything STRANGE about it. Laugh

Then, of course, there is the reading of boxes and labels in the grocery store OUT LOUD...to the eternal humiliation of your accompanying family members.

It's all part and parcel to living with someone who ...depends on their voice to make a living.

....or doing the "movie trailer narration" of your wife's moves in the supermarket. That's always popular Smile

I love turning up the radio to hear someone I know doing a spot.

Some years ago when I lived there I was the voice of the Phoenix area Chevy dealers. They had a $1 million dollar budget every month and that meant 2 or 3 commercials per show on all the major channels every night. Believe me, the mute button got a lot of action at our house. The guy who produced them did a great job, but hearing them (me) dozens of times each week? Uh-uh.

Lol Bruce!

About 15 years or so ago my then-other-half and I were arguing about the broken string trimmer. He wanted to toss it and buy a new one and I wanted him to get it repaired under the warranty (seriously why don't you guys EVER return or repair anything?)

I wore him down and he agreed to call and go through the warranty process, so he picks up the phone and dials. I see a really strange expression come over his face as he listens and all of a sudden he says "NOOO, it's YOU! I have you in both ears now!!!!"

I had forgotten I had done the Toro IVR.

Rebecca, where do you think comedy writers get ideas? They follow us VO peeps around and take notes. Look over you shoulder. Life can be the funniest.

Mel... it's the occasional twenty seconds that's amusing in an entire season of a US sitcom. That one point (usually around episode three) where you begrudgingly admit that a scene was actually funny.

(usually because the actors went off-script and improved)
