i took a day off from VO today to do a little work on the farm. the main goal was to drop 7 or 8 large, round hay bales in ditches for erosion control. i got to the barn at about 10am & left around 6pm. here's what happened:
1. put bucket on front of tractor. (keep in mind, this is usually at LEAST a two person job ... i was alone)
2. break hydraulic fitting on boom arm of tractor.
3. become coated in hydraulic fluid
4. cuss
5. drive to town for new fitting
6. install new fitting/cuss
7. continue putting the bucket on the tractor (that's right, it's not even on yet)
8. FINALLY after about an hour - the bucket is on!
9. grab hay bale and start driving down the hill.
10. notice bucket is slowly, but steadily dropping
11. cuss
12. quickly dump bale and make it back to the barn before all hydraulic fluid has poured out of the NEW leak
13. cuss
14. determine leak is coming from the area under the tractor seat
15. remove 2 of 3 bolts with no issue
16. cuss
17. struggle with the 3rd until giving up and cutting the head off the bolt with angle grinder
18. expose mass of hydraulic lines and hope to find the leak
19. start tractor & get sprayed with hydraulic fluid
20. cuss
21. remove leaky line
22. drive to town to have new line made ($50)
23. oh yeah, get another 5 gal. bucket of hydraulic fluid too! (another $50)
24. cuss while driving back to the farm
25. heat broken bolt with torch (wonder absently if the hydraulic fluid in the tractor would explode ... it didn't)
26. remove broken bolt
27. find old bolt in bucket that fits (kind of)
28. put tractor back together
29. rejoice!
30. there should be a "30"
believe it or not ... it was a good day! _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

Todd,
I hate to say it but taking a day VO work to play on the farm requires a few things you must have forgotten.
One: Like fishing, you must use the right words before you will catch anything.
Two: When working as a mechanic (this one I learned from experience): No bolt will come out easily without the right words.
Three: You must never; I repeat: NEVER use your VO voice when working on the farm.
Sounds like you had a great day. Enjoy tomorrow.

I have no agricultural pursuits, but I do have to finish putting up the drywall inside my booth this week, so I expect to be repeating steps 4, 11, 16, 20, and the important parts of 6 & 24. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

If I were to take a day off from VO I'd rather spend the day fishing, or driving up and down the Oregon coast, but I'm thinking repairing a tractor and tossing giant hay bales has its merits too.

tossing the bales of hay around IS fun, the smell of the earth is rejuvenating and i love the solitude. tractor repair is just what i had to do to get there. i only got one bale in a ditch ... but NEXT time everything will work!
maybe. _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

Maybe that's why I've never worked on a farm...I have no other voice.
And yeah, todd, it does sound like a great day. _________________ Doug Turkel (tur-KELL)

Why do I feel like such a slacker? I got nearly half of Todd's list accomplished myself. True, all I did was sleep through my alarm and then cuss. A lot. But still... that should count for summin, no? |
