Is there any?

I'll use gain to adjust peaks.
Normalizing afftects the amplitude of the entire region-- up or down.
So does Gain.

So...what?

Different ways of getting to the same result, except that Normalization takes a "limit" into consideration while gain just says,"OK - I'll increase it, but you might clip!"

-Anthony

EDIT: Or a simpler exaplanation

YOU TO GAIN - "OK, I have five apples. Give me 3 more"
GAIN IN REPLY - "Here you go. I hope you can carry all of them. Oh, who cares. Here's your 3 additional apples."

YOU TO NORMALIZATION - "OK, I need 8 apples. I don't know how many I have now, but just make it happen."
NORMALIZATION IN REPLY - "Hmmm... You have 5 apples already so I'll need to give you 3 apples. I see you can carry them so here you go."

oh one more thing - i used the word "limit" but normalization has nothing to do with limiting in terms of what a limiter does.

and yet another thing - a limiter is actually a compressor

That's it from me.

I knew a couple of those things.

heh.

In Pro Tools (Frank-- shut up!! xoxo)---
for my money, the Gain Control disdplay is superior to my Normalize display.
With Gain-- it tells me if I am at peak.
With the Normalize control, it just asks for a percent.

I think I'm all set.

I like Bomb Factory. Awesome compression without sounding like a doof.

Anthony,

Actually that apples thing was a pretty darn good way to explain it.

Anthony, I think the apples explanation was wonderful. Now if someone would do the same for everything in the studio, I would be happy.

It would make a great series of posts/articles/blog entries/book. (Hint, hint)

Great topic. I've been wondering about normalization as well. Does one do the normalization before or after compression, etc.? I usually apply one of my favorite Izotope Ozone 3 (for Adobe Audition) presets, then normalize to 100%. Am I lame?

I can always toy with amplitude, but I'll never be "normal".

Yo, Amy, did you actually pony up the $249 and change for that Ozone 3 plug-in?

I tried the ten day freebie trial and thought it was pretty good, but not for that price.

Oh, my God-- Amy.

Hart beat me to it; I agree. Smile Now to shut up before I get in trouble.... Blushing (N3)

Back on topic: Adobe Audition's "Compander" setting makes for a nice subtle compression without the uber-FM-radio squeezing. (Set it to "Classic Soft Knee for that effect.)
