Hello! My name is Rob Ellis, and I was in radio for 10 years(Lexington, Ky. ,Meridian, Mississippi and Houston, TX) and then had an identity crisis at 30 and went into sales for 10 years, and recently realized performance is where my heart really is...VO has been my dream for a long time and am finally going for it (with the support of my wife)...
I have Adobe Audition, a Shure SM 57 Mike, Mackie Spike audio interface and plenty of harddrive. Am currently doing VO coaching with Dolores Diehl, reading aloud every day for at least an hour and listening back to it, and doing occasional commercials for the local cable TV system....any suggestions for development at this stage? I have very little acting experience but lots of public speaking experience (10 years) through Toastmasters. Have read books by James Alburger, Harlan Hogan and Elaine Clark...also have been studying dialects(British , French, German, etc.)...is this(dialects) a worthwhile undertaking?
I am also wondering how you know when you're ready to do your first demo....My voice demo for the Minewurx Studio Beginning VO contest is posted on the Minewurx website( www.minewurx.com/theminewurxproject.html) and I would welcome any feedback...I would post it here but honestly had a hard time understanding how to do so though I tried to read the directions in the FAQ section.... |

i LOVE that! LOL
Welcome aboard, Rob! You'll find answers to many questions by using the Search function at the top. Other than that, just keep networking, working, training, practicing, and networking some more - this is definitely a great place to start your search for growth.

Welcome to the VO-BB Rob. I think you will find this place interesting, challenging, fun and extremely helpful. The talent here are Top Notch Professionals and very generous with their help and advice. Take advantage of the archives. It is filled with very useful and important info. Chances are, whatever you do a search on in the archives, if it's VO related, you will probably find at least one thread concerning it. On a side note, I am also entered in that contest....hahahaha. Good luck to you Rob. (of course not as much luck as I'm wishing myself) Just teasing. _________________ TG2

Rob...Welcome to the VO-BB... Voted best VO information website in 2005.
Lots of good information has been captured on these threads. Many questions have been answered... and many answers have been questioned... but it has always been a learning experience.
Have fun.
