....do any of you regularly experience dropouts during a SC session?
During my last two sessions with the same client we have had dropouts about every 5 minutes. Fortunately Skype to the rescue.
Afterwards I connected on my own to the SC "echo". That connection lasted much longer, 17 minutes before dropping out.
All firewalls and virus/malware programs were disabled, the bit rates were matched on both ends (48K) and I have an ethernet connection to my router.
I'm using the latest version of Source-Connect Standard.
Having not used Source Connect a lot since getting it a few years ago, I'm just wondering if these dropouts are normal with SC at this point, or if there's something in my setup (or my client's) that needs to be addressed.
Input as always, appreciated! |

It's been a while since I've used SC. I don't remember drop outs being a huge issue though, Kind of a "once in a while" thing? _________________ Wicked huge.....in India.

These dropouts are almost certainly because you have not done your router port configuration correctly. I had similar problems until Rebeka fixed my port mapping, and have not had a single issue since. _________________ Graeme Spicer

Same here. I had dropouts occasionally before I did the correct config. All the instructions on the needed setup are in their documentation. |

Source Connect has EXCELLENT customer service, so by all means give them a shout! I had some problems last year (router-related), and it took the better part of a day to get it fixed, but it was well worth the hassle. Rock-solid since then. _________________ Best regards,

Hey Gang, thanks again for your input.
Did most of you fix this yourself via the step-by-step tutorial on the SC website?
Or did you purchase support credits and have them walk you through it? |

I did the step by step on the site and was able to get it set up. |

I had forgotten about it, but I looked back and yes, I did pony up roughly $100/year for the service contract. Well worth it if you are committed to Source Connect. (I am, though I'll be giving iPdtl a try soon too. And I may be ditching ISDN...). _________________ Best regards,

I've had the service contract for SC which helps immensely and staff there is quite efficient at fixing issues, so it's worth it to me. Funny, my ISDN has been experiencing chirps, network drop outs, and this is a service I've now been having to pay nearly $400/month for. I'm dropping ISDN by April 1st (All Fools Day, appropriately). As an alternative, I've been using ipDTL for sessions successfully, and have a commercial studio lined up that I can book for absolutely must-use ISDN gigs, or I'll use a bridging service thru Source-Connect. I will be selling my Telos Zephyr 9202 wonderful workhorse unit by around the end of the first quarter of the year. Buh-bye, AT&T. _________________ Bobbin Beam

Bobbin--
I tested ipdtl and it seems fine, but since you're using it for actual sessions, does that mean someone on the studio or client side has started using it as well?
Or are you just having them use your second log-in, ie. all on your dime? |

Yes. Three producers I've worked with recently already use it and like the results, provided it's set up right. ipDTL actually saved a session that started out as ISDN. We were getting screeches and complete drop outs in the ISDN. Thankfully this guy that was engineering the session also is a voice talent and was completely set up to record me on his end. I've invested the meager $125 for the annual subscription and made the $ back many times over at this point. I gave him my producer credentials to login and connect. He even had a remote phone patch he bussed onto his mixing board so the client could direct me from his remote location.
Then last week I did another session through Sunspots. I'm doing my best to talk with agents and clients I work with to educate them about it. I realize it may take a while to completely catch on, but I truly believe VOIP in some form will be the future, as the telcos are actively trying to phase out ISDN. _________________ Bobbin Beam

Were you saying the Sunspots session was ipDTL or ISDN? _________________ Wicked huge.....in India.

Source Elements has requested to join the VO-bb. I hope they get approved so they can start being a part of the conversation! IPDTL uses the OPUS codec, that really is part of the key to success, coupled with the very low barrier to entry (cost, ease of setup). Glad to hear it's working out well for you, Bobbin, and Buh bye ISDN!!! We'll have IPDTL to ISDN bridging at outofhear.com working in a few weeks. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

I hope Sunspots picks up IPDTL, the ISDN requirement has stopped me from approaching them. |
