From time to time, my alma mater, the University of New Hampshire, emails the alumni with links to videos produced by the school's in-house Video Production Department. Several times, after watching one of the videos, I have attempted to contact the department to offer my pro-bono services, but have never managed to make a connection.
Today, Voices.com had a job posting from UNH and I siezed the opportunity to submit a demo and included the following note:
"Thanks for the opportunity.
If you wish to learn more about me (including contact info), feel free to visit my website at leegordonproductions-dot-com.
Voices.com rules require a minimum price quote of $100 but as a proud UNH graduate, I would be happy to voice other projects you may have, free of charge.
I look forward to hearing from you."
I apologize to all my fellow voiceoverists for "devaluing the profession." _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

We all make choices. We all do stuff for the pleasure of doing it, or in an attempt to "give back". Good call Lee... if your alma mater needs something, and you can supply it... totally your call as to doing it pro bono.
I just hope The Voices Police don't catch you _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

Well, as it turns out, I got the job. They deposited the $100 into SurePay and I'll probably just add the $90.91 to my annual donation to the school.
Presumably, they hired me because they liked my take on their script (that's what they told me), not because I was willing to work cheap (or free). But my real intention was to just to make the connection with someone in the department so I can donate my services to the school in the future. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

Good for you and good for them, Lee. They made the right call, all the way around. _________________ Scott R. Pollak

I just did this too! An Emerson student contacted me with a few off-camera lines for his student film. Well I certainly remember being a student so I said I would love to do it free of charge. Goodness knows Dan and I can't contribute as alum in a financial sense but I sure can talk. Good job, Lee. _________________ 006 member of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Mic. Bonded by sound.
