the idea is intriguing...

http://www.mercurynews.com/business/ci_24224975/apple-threatened-by-growth-prepaid-smartphone-plans

I've got an Ipad, two Apple computers, and an iPod... I'd debating the real purpose of my iPhone with its bloated monthly bill.. my contract was up a while ago and I'm not in a hurry to upgrade...

As long as I could get texts, I probably could.

Maybe.

Wait, I have to know what's happening on Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter...

Hmmmm

I find that the combination of an Android phone and an iPad gets me pretty much everything I need. The phone has a grandfathered unlimited data plan and third party apps allow me to turn it in to a high speed hub for my iPad or for a friend, e tc. in need. The network is secure and requires a password.

Additionally, I have clients, etc. that are still using Flash sites and even the alleged Flash enabled browsers for the iOS seem to only work about a third of the time.

So, I suppose the answer to your question is "No", although I am know deep down that most of the stuff I have simply allows me to work/ respond a bit better and nothing is ultimately the "end all and be all".

You can paint a house with all manner of thing, but in the end, the best job is done by a professional painter and nobody raves about what their painter used to get the job done.

It would also suppose that many houses would be poorly painted by an amateur (improperly trained and/or inexperienced) painter regardless of the quality of their tools.

You can use pretty much any unlocked GSM phone on the prepaid networks. If the coverage is sufficient, you can use your iPhone (just get it unlocked if GSM) with Straight Talk. Works just fine. The only issue is that the national coverage is nowhere near as good as AT&T. If you don't travel much, it's a no brainer. If you travel, it is lame. I have an ATT data plan on my iPad, and it had service almost everywhere the last time I drove across the country. The phone on the other hand, had majorly patchy service.

If I didn't need to be connected all the time, I would ditch the phone all together. I miss the days of not being reachable.

I kind of do, too.

And I hate that panicky feeling I get when I forget my phone. Like some global disaster will occur if I can't check my email for a couple of hours...

if you used Ting.com you'd probably not care about having a data expense any longer. You only pay for what you ACTUALLY USE! What a concept. Meanwhile, my wife's iPhone 4s is on Virgin Mobile costing a whopping $30/mo. I'm the dummy with Verizon, but I needed the network with the best coverage in Los Angeles no matter the cost...

Absolutely not. I live connected, and have saved my bacon more than once by being able to send and receive critical client files from my smartphone. Not going back.

I moved from two dumb phones to a smart phone a year or two ago. The reason was, a client insisted on paying by credit card and most economical way for me to make that happen was to get the Square app, which required that I have a smartphone.

Since my laptop decided to go out of commission two days before Faffcon, my phone was the only means I had to stay connected while in San Antonio. (Could not have posted any cakes with a dumb phone.)

With an "uncomfortable" ease, considering today's tech culture.
