From the Board Czar's Household Hint Department:

This isn't about VO-- it's about saving energy.

Every few weeks, you should remove the lint trap from your clothes dryer and wash it-- scrub it. The stuff that's in the dryer sheets we use collects on the screen and eventually blocks the transmission of moisture. The First time I took a look at my lint trap to see how "bad" it might be it looked perfectly clear-- I clean it out religiously between wash loads.

Then I ran some water into it.

It retained nearly all the water, as though the screen were a solid.
yecch!

Think how much air flow it was blocking. Waste-o-rama! and the lint was sticking to the dryer door and other places because the screen wasn't doing its job.
I scrubbed it with 409 (a spray cleaner) and a toothbrush until the water ran through. Now I do it about every 6 weeks.

Dryer lint is enormously combustable-- the last thing we need in our homes is MORE places for it to accumulate. Especially places that are hard-to-reach.

That's all for now.

Mama DB

Rather than spend money on binoculars to view distant objects just stand closer to the object you wish to view and use the naked eye.

On a related note, back when I was a Boy Scout we used to collect the lint from the dryer and take it on camping trips because it makes such a good fire starter. Very flammable.

According to the Tightwad Gazette you can use dryer lint to make Hallowe'en masks, if you don't have any campfires planned.

I just tried running water through my lint trap to see if regular fabric softener might have that effect but apparently it doesn't. Now I can return to my regular program of worries.

Nah-- it's the dryer sheets.
Good ol' Downy in the washing machine doesn't have that waxy buildup we housewives hate.

i was at a friend's house one day and we smelled smoke. his dryer caught fire - luckily we were in the basement and noticed it right away. someone went to get water and I yelled "NO!!!!" I dumped a box of baking soda on it while someone called the fire department. (By the way, the baking soda did nothing - it couldn't get to the source from where we were.)

NEwho - funny you should bring this up now because I have so much laundry to do and I now have a reason not to do it Inoccent

Hmmmm, after each load dries, I just clean out the lint trap by hand.

I always clean out the lint trap by hand, too.

Take it out and see if water runs through it.

I must be too fussy, but I rinse mine thoroughly each time I clean the lint from it. Hey - it ain't no big thing, ya know, the laundry tub is right there next to the washer dryer and I see no sense in putting it back without rinsing it out first.

And yes, I do most of the laundry.
