Go on, tell us

I get up at 0730 to an empty diary except for a "Stick man" doodle I did the night before. He was playing the Spanish Gypsy Scale in D on the cold indifferent heart strings of a disembowelled Russian organised criminal who had just stolen some bread and coal from a pensioner in Belarus.

0800 First cab off the rank here in Portgordon regular CNBC promo session followed by coffee, read newspapers (online), walk Collies along beach.

0900 Postman Pat arrives as I leave for the gym.

1015 Producer (Beppe) contacts me regarding a job for Kitchen company.
Light snack
1100 Session for Beppe
1130 Collie walk from Portknockie to Findochty. En Route Patrick phones about session at 1pm it will be a commercial for Lambrini an sparkling alcoholic beverage.
1230 - Type this during coffee break
1300 - Session for Lambrini
1320 - Shower, shave
1355 - Just about to do corporate session for oil company.
1430 - Oil Co session done
1445 - 'splainin' stuff for people what make pills n potions. Could take a while.
1600 - All done as far as sessions are concerned. Dog walk next!
1610 -Dog walk along beach up on to old railway line and back into village. During this walk agent in London calls. Session for ad agency in Holland booked, I am to play the part of an airline Captain.
1700 - Food prepared and eaten. Shopping trip (groceries) postponed as another session. Corporate type read-out-loud at 1730. Printing scripts now
1800 - Conversation with agent in London. TV commercial session booked for 9am Monday.
1830 - ISDN test with studio engineer in preparation for Monday ....
19.30 Arrived at M&S in Elgin and spent £59.30 on grocery items.

Weather in Portgordon hot but with the help of an easterly wind far from "PB served oven baked."

I decided go take Fridays off during the month of August to work on the house, so no VO for me today.

- sanding ceiling
- plastering wall cracks and holes
- sanding said walls Smile

Can I go back to VO now? Shocked

9am- Quick revision for an eLearning project
11am- Joined the boyfriend for a top secret lease signing for a new bar (was in charge of photographing the event)
Noon- Celebratory lunch
3pm- Invoicing and more invoicing
4pm- Revision for a Barbie spot I voiced last week
5pm (now)- Sending off auditions and recording a bit on an iPad aHobo Tounge

It was slow work-wise, crazy scary/exciting life-wise and in a couple of hours I'll continue with a dinner out with other VOs and directors in the area...and then maybe a late-night dip in the pool or a trip to a dog park.

I do love Fridays!!!

0800 Arose from my slumber and performed morning ablutions.
0830 Checked e-mail in case there was anything important. There wasn't.
0840 Headed for the golf course.
0855 Teed off. Played 9 holes. Stunk up the joint.
1045 Left golf course and went to Comcast to return the two unneeded "free" analog-to-digital converters that they started collecting a service charge of 2 bucks apiece each month.
1130 Returned home, checked email, knocked off a few auditions, checked VO-BB, got caught up on some important Facebooking.
1400 Hadn't experienced enough torture for the day, so headed for another golf course to play another nine holes. Didn't stink it up nearly as much as the morning round.
1430 While on the fairway, fielded a phone call from the garage to get the bad news about all the work my van needs. Authorized another $300 worth of repairs.
1630 Went to Target looking to buy more golf balls to replace the ones I had deposited in various ponds and streams. Didn't find my brand.
1645 Went to Trader Joe to buy something for dinner.
1700 Got home and attacked the backlog of auditions that arrived while I was out screwing around.
1945 Bored the crap out of all the VO-BB members foolish enough to read the scintillating account of my day.
1958 Ate dinner and watched the ballgame.

0900 Auditions and back and forth emails on upcoming projects
1000 Narrated chapter 16 of Big Lake Lynching
1030 Narrated chapter 17 of Big Lake Lynching
1100 Narrated chapter 18 of Big Lake Lynching
1200 Narrated chapter 19 of Big Lake Lynching
1300 Lunch and the Daily Show (Love that show)
1400 Stared editing chapter 15 of Big Lake Lynching
1545 Eyes are blurry and mind is fried from the week. Quit for the day.
1546 Wish I was playing golf with Lee.

0730 Arose and addressed the needs of the farm animals (milked chickens, fed goats....wait...that may be backwards...)
0830 Finished with critters. Ate breakfast while reviewing email from client asking for slower read on lines I delivered on Thursday.
1030 VO revisions finished and posted. Initiated random puttering.
1100 Email from client. Revisions are perfecto. His client will review on Tuesday. Switch from puttering to loading trash into the truck for a run to the dump.
1300 Home from trash run. Still no mail? Expected check from local client by now. Cleaned up the house a little, finished packing for weekend work.
1400 Drove to local resort for first of two weekend work shifts
1600 Began 4-hour shift escorting Shrek and Fiona (costumed characters) to and from the resort's staging area for "meet and greet" event.
2015 Dinner with co-workers in employee cafeteria
2100 Drove to friend's house near resort for overnight stay. Found spare room unprepared for my arrival (bed totally disassembled)
2110 Pulled out laptop and began online puttering
2230 Finished writing this list and put laptop aside to go get goodies from kitchen and prep for bed.

Second work shift -- dressing up in costume to entertain guests at resort breakfast -- kicks off at 0700 tomorrow. Sweet dreams, friends. Smile

Thanks for playing!

It was great to read the "for the fun of it" stuff as well as the "now down to business".

The motto below the coat of arms for people in our job ought to say "We have mics and we have brooms so that every day we may eat"

In which case, your eyes wouldn't have been blurry; they would have been bleeding.

06:00 - Obnoxious alarm goes off. Woke up, got out of bed, dragged a comb across my hair. I have a NY gig and the buggers wanted me there at 9:45
06:20 - Coffee and more coffee and toast.
07:20 - Get to local station earlier than expected and hop on the 7:40 train to the Big Bad City.
09:11 - Arrive at Penn station and manage to avoid eye-contact with the hucksters, preachers and crazies that seem to congregate at the 7th Avenue exit. Over the years I've acquired the skill of walking through NY like a native... don't look up at tall buildings, don't make eye-contact and move with a sense of purpose.
09:30 - Park Avenue South & 19th Street. I arrived early after a nice stroll downtown.
10:00 - ADR session starts... I look lovingly at the U87 in front of me. Session goes well... the producer (Samantha) is a joy to work with, she likes me and I've become her go-to Brit.
12:14 - Train home. As with my journey in, I get lost in the audiobook I'm listening to.
14:00 - Arrive home to a request for another in the series of 3-minute videos I'm doing for a company (it's the fifth for them and it's turning into a nice little earner).
14:15 - Lunch. Warmed-up leftover General Tao's chicken.
14:30 - Record the video VO.
15:00 - Contacted about a V123 audition I did back in June. Booked the gig and directed session arranged for next week.
15:30 - Sit out on deck enjoying the sun.
16:30 - Give in to being totally cream-crackered from my unusually early start and decide to take a nap.
18:30 - Wake to find I'd received a message about an urgent gig in the city on Monday. Someone recommended me and I've never worked with these people before. Called client's phone, mobile and emailed... no response yet. See what happens when you take a nap in the middle of the day!
19:00 - Liverwurst sandwich & PG Tips tea
20:00 - Skype chat with colleague discussing billing, bidding, finances, VO styles, nostalgia, politics and idiots.
21:30 - Catch up on emails and billing.
22:00 - Researching plans for new studio build-out. There's room for a small sofa, so I get totally distracted on the Ikea website.
23:30 - Call it a night. This is really early for me... but getting up a 6am kills me. I fell asleep watching a bad movie. It was meant to be a good post-apocalyptic drama, but it just turned into another slasher-flick.

This was a very unusual day for me. If this happened every day, I would be a) rich, b) dead ... Work has been absolutely crazy for the last few weeks... it's the busiest I've ever been. For the first time ever, I'm running into scheduling issues. Lovin' it!

Friday:

8:30 a.m. UP
9:00 a.m. breakfast and email run
10:30: record some quick lines for an animator in Berlin
11:45: finishing recording and editing, upload
noon: off the rest of the day! I've been taking off Friday afternoons and Saturdays this summer to work on housey-personal projects. Seems like I get back in the swing of things on Sunday for some reason. Also, I usually work on writing, etc. until about midnight each day. We're both night owls here.

Friday:

0815 - Leave house, headed for the studio.
0825 - Arrive at studio. (Delayed by neighbor I bumped into during the walk.)
0830 - Revise two lines from yesterday's corporate narration.
0845 - Reply to a couple of potential clients who emailed to ask about rates, availability, etc.
0900 - ISDN session for a 2 minute DR TV spot for a kids' product that should be airing on the kid's networks within a coupla' weeks. (NDA prohibits details.)
1000 - 2 minute Explainer video VO.
1030 - Rare (and very fun!) opportunity to do some character voices for some radio & TV spots for a regional electric company.
1115 - Training video VO during which I get to say fun things like: "To remove the respirator strap assembly, pull the upper legs from the facepiece buttons. Pry the valve cover assembly from the facepiece exhalation port."
1200 - Auditions and invoicing.
1300 - Cut out early when a couple friends call to invite me to join them for a 16 mile (~25.5 km) skate. (Speedskating is a pack sport, and drafting is much easier/more effective if you have more than 3 or 4 people in a paceline.)
1500 - Back home to check inbox, and for the treat of a surprise international phone call from Graeme S...great guy!
1600 - Tennis.
1800 - Home to find that half the neighborhood (and a total of 9 kids!) had found their way to our house. So much for winding down quietly.
1803 - Find myself wishing that I had a couple of Border Collies who needed to be walked from Portknockie to Findochty. Wink

Sometimes an 1800 like that can be fine but after a full day I get the 1803.
