For the hick of it, I'm trying out a Senheiser 421 mic this a.m....or trying to. I turned off the phantom power on my Mackie 1402 (as I need the phantom for my standard, AT mic). So what more do I need to do? I'm getting about no sound. Mic cable goes from mic to processor to mixer to Adobe Audition. Naturally, I thought changing mics from one that requires phantom power to one that doesn't would merely require bypassing the phantom switch on mixer. I'm missing something. Anyone? _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be. Hello!

Bettie,
On the Mackie (I use the same board), make sure you have the trim pot for the microphone turned up enough. That's the small round knob located just below where you plug in the mike. Turn it clockwise slowly until you start to get a better level from the mike.
I recommend that you connect the Sennheiser into a different line than your regular Audio Technica mike, so that you don't mess up the trim for that mike while adjusting for the 421. _________________ Be well,

Something is askew here, Bettie. I have a 421 in my collection. I run it straight into the mixer then to the audio interface. The pre's in your mixer should give you the modulation you need. I've found a VP doesn't do much for a 421, Something isn't working in your chain. _________________ www.voiceoverdrew.com

Must be the pre cuz nothing has worked and I'm returning the mic (short-term borrowing) and sticking with what I gots. When I'm next contemplating a dynamic mic, perhaps I'll figure it out. But not right now...that's precisely how I waste my time!!
Thanks, buddies! (Drew...you look nothing like your animated self!!) _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be. Hello!

Sorry to hijack this thread, but I agree. I was trying to decide if Drew really used a photo of himself, or if it was a pic of someone famous that I should know but don't! _________________ Mary |

YEAH for Leos! I turned XX on the 28th (and I ain't talkin' pole dancing). A friend gave me a calendar with a different phrase for each day, in Spanish. On my birthday, translated it said: The lion is the king of the jungle. Roooooaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrr!
BTW, I'm back with the 421 again after talking to my audio friends. Perhaps I wasn't testing into the TOP of the mic?? Stay tuned... _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be. Hello!

Bettie,
Yes, unlike your Audio Technica, the Sennheiser is normally "addressed" at the end. Please do let us know how it goes. _________________ Be well,

Well, then. You know the sfx one uses to make it sound as it the voice is coming from a metal basement? Yep, that's the dang deal there with the 421. I didn't mess with settings on my pre, but instead swapped out for the NT1000, which I also borrowed. Now I'm in trouble. It is sweeeeeet. Quite bassy, though, and my voice is pretty low so if I were to mess with the pre settings, well, I'd soften it a little.
As for deets on the 421, I upped the mic gain on the mixer and still got pretty low volume, tinny sound that sounded, well, wrong. Guess I'm meant for the condenser mic, tho I think from all the years doing radio prod. with the EV-RE20, I'd use that again if I were looking seriously at dynamics.

Bettie,
I say that I have an RE-20 that's just collecting dust. _________________ Be well,

Betty, the Senny 421 has a rolloff switch at the "bottom" of the mic. It's probably on the voice setting. Change to the "M" and see if that makes a difference in the sound. |

Watch out for the mites; they're allergens!
What mic do you use mainly for VO?
10-4 Allen. I'll switch them again and give it a whirl. _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be. Hello!

Bettie,
Thankfully, I have no allergies.

Audio Technica AT-4033 for about 85% of my work(the mike in my home studio). AKG 414TLII for about 10% of my work (a studio where I do a pretty regular amount of work) and Neumann U87 (in another studio where I do work pretty often) for the other 5%. _________________ Be well,
