Trying to figure out how to trouble shoot this issue...

Relatively new Onyx mixer
Old Gina Sound card
Reliable AKG C3000

Sometimes it works great! Low noise floor (-60), good gain. But suddenly, there is a bit of a crackle and the amp dives to practically nothing. Have turned off mixer, closed Audition, rebooted computer and sometimes it comes back to normal - for a little while. Today, did all of that twice - and amplitude still very very low - too low to use.

When using the MicPortPro - everything is fine. But I will not be able to use my phone patch tomorrow for a session as planned - at least at this point in time.

So, how do I trouble shoot if it is the mixer or the old sound card?

Call an engineer?

For what it's worth Connie... the way you describe it (crackle then dip) I'd go straight for the XLR cables/connectors. The upside is that it's the easiest fix... the downside is that you've got have luck on your side for it to be the easiest fix!

If it's not as simple as that.... Try reseating the sound card. If it's that old, it's connections could be iffy. Reseating it once or twice is usually enough to burnish the contacts sufficiently to improve the connection.

Don, I just opened her up and blew out the dust and reseated the card. I appears to be working at the moment, so that MAY have been it. I have a phone patch session in a couple of hours - crossing fingers that I don't have to switch to ear bud and cell phone with MicPortPro, but it is nice to have a backup plan!

I've managed to work some of the lower amplitudes over the years: 550, 620, and 760 AM come to mind.

I installed a new system for a client yesterday, replacing Mbox Mini with a Scarlett 2i2, and installing a RoadWarrior LC XL. Despite my insisting she should keep the Mbox Mini just in case as backup, she told me she was going to throw it out, so I took it with me. Today the Scarlett crapped out.

BACKUP GEAR AND DATA, PEOPLE!!!
