|
|
My last demo is about a year old, and is full of spots that I recorded in one studio, on one mic, for the purposes of creating a demo.
This is my attempt to create a new demo from actual spots I've been paid to voice. Four spots recorded in different environments and with different mics.
I still want to use one of the spots from my last demo, but I can't figure out which one to include. My gut is telling me to go with the one I enjoyed doing the most, so that's what I've included for now.
I'm wondering if you fine folks would have a listen to the new one, and a listen to the old, and let me know if there's an alternate you think I should salvage from the old one. Or if my actual spots are not up to snuff, I'd really like to know that, too.

Thank you thank you thank you for your help. _________________ www.juliaknippen.com

Good stuff. I'm going to use the second section of the new demo for a bit of discussion. Lengthy conversation last night with my daughter. She and her husband have all the gadgets. Music tracks for all occasions. She pointed out something that I knew but seldom talk about. ROAD NOISE. Some music tracks, some voices just get lost in the road noise while travelling. Her example was the music of Lyle Lovett. Road noise swallows him up compared to other music on a given play list.
The second tract in your new demo struck me as a voice style that would be more impacted by road noise that your other tracks. I'm sure there are times when advertisers will like the voice quality of that track for some messages they want to get across. I'm not suggesting you take it out of your demo, I'm not suggesting that you change the style... at least not significantly. But you may want to experiment with some small variation that would keep that particular "voice" on top of every thing going on around it. If you are doing the production, I would be careful about using a music bed that competes with it. |

Thank you for the feedback. This is really helpful. The second spot is the only one of the four that I produced myself. So I'm certain it's the mix and not my voice. Back to the drawing board on that one! Thank you so much for the 2nd set of ears. _________________ www.juliaknippen.com

I like your new stuff which is on par with your "made up" stuff, and I think I like the Safeco read the best, maybe even as a lead off clip. I'd consider taking one more of your old bits, mix it in with the new bits and shorten most of them so the demo "sizzles" just a bit more. It can be less than a minute...no crime in that. And speaking of sizzle the whole thing could use a little production boost such as compression to give it a fuller sound.
You're good kid. You've got a future in this biz.

Thank you for the feedback and encouragement, Bruce. It really means a lot.
And thank you for the excellent suggestions. I think I will be plunking down some money to get it up to professional standards compression-wise, but in the meantime, this will be a good excuse to do some research and roll up my sleeves and practice my production chops. _________________ www.juliaknippen.com
