Directors can say the craziest/dumbest things......I know I have said some weird stuff in order to get my point across when directing someone. I have also heard some funny things when stepping on the other side of the camera or mic myself.
Just recently....I told someone to "lazy it up a bit".....yeah, good stuff. I guess when "slow it down" does not work, you resort to other means to get your point through.
What are some good bits of directing you have had over the years or perhaps just recently? I know there are some good ones out there. _________________ Ben

Ben,
My favorite director, years ago, would sometimes stop me and just say, "Bob, I know you can do that line better." And, you know what? He was always right. _________________ Be well,

"Don't pause, but make it sound like a pause."
"sound friendly, but menacing."
"Try double-throating it."
"The copy isn't very funny. So make it sound funny."
OH! Good direction... I was once told that maybe it would be a good thing to change careers. |

Okay, this isn't direction but it was definitely a "say what?" I saw this on a production company website this morning:
"John again went to England for Company ABC, only this time it was Wales".
Wiping tears here... |

I can think of 37 comments, all of which would make DB very unhappy.

What I like is the ever popular "Make this one your own" and then they add... "but do it like this..."
HOW is that my own?
When working with "non-professional" talent, I like to just have them "Parrot" me. I just wrote a piece on this yesterday on my Blog. _________________ Dave "Christi" Felton

One my favorite commercials is the Cingular Star Wars ringtone spot wherein the director tells a growling Chewbacca "I love it! Now make me hate it."
EDIT: Found the clip (scroll about halfway down). _________________ Great Voice. Great Choice. For Voice Talking and stuff.

My best was:
"Now Katrina, step into the light"
and for some reason, I knew exactly what he meant. |

The one I hear all the time is "make it conversational" while they're asking you to read a list of drug side affects or something equally NOT conversational.
My favorite line of copy was from a narration: "Settlers used covered bridges to cross rivers." So informative! |

My h*** -- other than the "make it sound blue" direction previously referred to -- was as the on-camera co-host of an outdoor cooking show that ran for two seasons on one of our networks. Now please bear in mind that I am not a cook, chef, gourmand or anything of the sort. Why oh why did I get cast as co-host of a cooking show? Had it been an old car show, home renovation show, or aviation show I could have more than held my own. But noooo -- the producer would describe some arcane kitchenish gadget or technique with which he was intimately familiar but was cyrillic to me, and then roll camera at which point I was to provide a coherent and cheerful adlib of the material just presented. To top it all off the man insisted on lighting that made 747 landing lights look dim. Yeah, the food looked great and so did I, but my eyeballs were fried. _________________ Blue skies -- Lauren Lee

Nice one, LaurenLee!
Cy·ril·lic ( P ) Pronunciation Key (s-rlk) adj. Of or being any of the alphabets based on Glagolitic and used for certain Slavic languages, such as Russian.
Now abaout that 'Glagolitic'.............. _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be. Hello!
